Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

Stupid me.  I bought a new washer, but I could kick myself. Todays appliances are junk.

Exactly. I purchased a front load washer and dryer set (sparse water is used in the wash and the clothes never feel clean)  I want to replace and return to a top load.

To answer the question:  it depends on the age/condition of the set.

Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

probably today with the shortage on washers and dryers like all appliances due to Covid problems I would attempt to fix it for now... and later replace when the supply of things is caught back up so you can purchase what you want rather than by what is available.

Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

My set is over 30 years old, good old reliable Kenmore! Just last week the timer knob broke on the washer. But, that was an easy fix; the replacement knob came in 1 day.

I did wonder if it was time to get a new washer. And I did wonder if I would be happy with an unmatched set.

@Annabellethecat66 - I know what you mean! DH can fix anything! Way more intricate than to replace a knob!

Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

@Harpa     My last Kenmore washer and dryer lasted over 15 years... my current washer and dryer are also Kenmore and are going on 15 years old.... I love Kenmore!

Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

I should have said that the washer was beyond repair, so it had to go.

The dryer has been fixed a few times and is about 16 years old.

It is still working  (makes a grinding sound sometimes) but don't know for how much longer.

Plus the set is in my kitchen.

Thank you for all of your replies.

Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

@Sg1957  my washer/dryer combo is heading toward its 29th birthday.   I plan to replace both as soon as one gives me trouble.  Mine stand next to each other and I think I would be irritated every time I opened the doors on mismatched appliances.

but there was a time in my life, my washer and dryer weren't even on the same floor in my house.  I never thought about whether they matched until I accumulated the money to redo so they could be together.

Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

I've always  had my appliances repaired  by my Husband. Once in a rare moon , I had an appliance  be broken beyond repair . I've saved $$$$ thousands on having appliances repaired. That being said , if you can't find a decent repair person who knows how to diagnose an appliance issue and  know how /where to order the part , then do the repair ,  I feel for you. Repair of small  apliances is a lost art . This is a good reason to  encourage people to enter trade schools .

It would depend on how old the appliance that was still working was.  I recently replaced my front loading washing machine, which I had bought with the matching dryer about 5 years ago.  I hated that washer and replaced it with a deep fill top loader.   I thought about buying a matching set, but the dryer still worked perfectly.   If the set had been older, I may have replaced them both.   In my experience, the dryer always outlasts the washer.

@lavenderfields   May I ask what brand of top loading washer did you buy?  Will it allow you to fill and soak a load of laundry?  TIA

Re: Washer and Dryer Question?

I did this a few years ago - I forget which one "went" but I did buy a new matched set.  However, both appliances were very old and a Black Friday sale really made it worth my while.  I'd say it would depend on the age of the other appliance.

Depends on its age and how much it costs to repair? I firmly believe that every appliance deserves a chance to be repaired at least once. An honest repairman should let you know if it is worth fixing.
