@spumoni99

Actually, @Allthingsgirly67  was right.  Late model means newer not older.

Wikipedia: A late model car is a car which has been recently designed or manufactured, often the latest model.

Thanks for clarifying that for  me, I always thought that meant older cars.

Re: Wary of donating to charities.

@Allthingsgirly67 I get what you are saying. My daughter, who is a very generous person, donates a lot through different charities. One year she volunteered to deliver donated Christmas gifts to "needy" families. To say the least she was shocked when she went into the homes of these people.

To make this clear, these people had decent homes but it was mostly the attitudes of the people. She said there were a couple that were very appreciative but the others would say, "oh, you can just put those under the tree" with no thank you's whatsoever. The worst part, according to my daughter, is the tree had tons of presents. Beyond what you can imagine. She later discovered these recipients "claimed" they were needy at several charities. It was an eye opener for her.

I had a very extensive personality test performed several years ago. A result in one area said I was a very generous person but it had to be proven to me that a person was definitely in need.

To those that state it is not the charity's responsibility to determine whether a family does indeed need help, I completely disagree. I do know there are many needy families that are missing out due to the greed of others. I have also seen this first hand. It should be determined that a family is in poverty before donating.

Re: Wary of donating to charities.

I only donate locally to help families in this area of southern WV.   Every local group assisting the needy is struggling to provide help to the increasing numbers asking for assistance.

I estimate the actual number of food bags and ready to eat Thanksgiving meals handed out in this small area to be staggering this year, since more and more groups stepped up to help.  Several of the announcements for these giveaways gave a pickup time, like 12-3, or until the food was gone.  This food was available to anyone, so it was always gone before the time frame was up.  One church handed out 250 ready to go meals in 45 minutes!

Like OP, the one thing that surprises me with the needy living in this area, is that you rarely see old vehicles.  I know a family of 5 who live in a run down house, husband collects SS disability, but in their driveway sits a Mustang, a Corvette and a Ford F-250.

Re: Wary of donating to charities.

There are always going to be scammers. People think they are entitled to get free stuff..As far as the vouchers for "spaying" , if it was for low income then proof should have been required. I think most people struggling to put food on the table don't go to food banks..

They have a site where you can check various charities about their operating expenses and how it is disbursed. I would never donate to ASCPA because most of the money goes to the board.

You can volunteer your services to help people. You don't need to donate money..Just choose a place you feel comfortable with and go from their. I still say you can't judge someone by the car they drive. Many like to put on a good show to save their self respect. Their car could be on the verge of being repossessed. Who knows what lies beneath the surface.

@spumoni99  You're thinking of early model cars.

@cjm61 If I had been your daughter I would have been tempted to say (after observing all the gifts already under the tree)"Oh, I'm so sorry...do I have the right house?"

As an fyi

A late model car is a car which has been recently designed or manufactured, often the latest model. (An early model car or classic car is a car old enough to be of historical interest; there is no usual intermediate term.)

Re: Wary of donating to charities.

I would never question why someone might be hungry and in need of food assistance.

I remember during the pandemic when thousands lost employment,  there would be long, long car lines for food donations.  I don't think that the model or value of the vehicles were checked.

I give what I can to a number of food related charities, from soup kitchens for the homeless to organizations which gather and repurpose unused food.

If skeptical,  every legitimate 501c3 can be researched in depth.

I always assume that I could be in need one day.

Re: Wary of donating to charities.

It's important to me to know that my money or donations go where they say they are going so I am picky about charities and/or donations. Giving money randomly without looking into a situation, imo, takes away from those really in need and there are plenty of those. That way one can rest easy knowing their money went for a "good" cause and to people truely in need.
