Re: Wanting to move to Florida- question/ disappointed

@elainemasey .............You and hubby might consider taking a vacation in SW Fl.  Check it out for yourselves and see what you like about the area before you do any actual moving.

What the OP should be asking or worried about is Medical Care. My husband, myself and my mom moved down to the West Coast of FL. Biggest mistake ever!

They treat you terrible, their answer to everything is Tylenol. My husband needed a scope done and they only had 1 doctor who could do this.. My mom was left to die with these people, it was just horrible.. We sold our beautiful home just to  get back North. They are so behind in the medical field down there its very sad. I don't know if the OP is young and not fearful of getting sick but keep in mind, things will come up and you will be ****** out of luck on the West Coast. Now the East, you have some good medical hospitals and doctors. They know where the money is and will be quick to tell you so... Florida isn't what it use to be, we use to call it Paradise, now we just call it Gods waiting room, if you know what I mean... Its okay to visit but not to live....... I'd stay in the Carolinas or Virginia.Sure its cheap to live in FL but ask yourself why....... Good luck to you.......

I never heard this about Florida before. I would've thought Florida would have great medical care because it's a large, populous state and it has a lot of older people who would seem to require and demand great care.

Personally I couldn't live in Florida because of the heat and humidity. It's fun to visit for a week, but I couldn't handle months and years on end of that.

Hi, My husband and I want to relocate from Massachusetts to maybe SW Florida but very open. Hoping to be along the coast rather than inland. The problem I'm finding is there doesn't seem to be any towns. Coming from Mass, we have towns with a center, library, post office, maybe a common. This is where town activities would be held, band concerts, parades etc. You would see friends and have a sense of community. Does that exist in Florida? Any place in Florida? Getting discouraged. Would we be better off in North or South Carolina?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

@elainemasey - if you are seriously considering Florida or any other southern state, you should make it a point of staying for no less than a month during July or August to see if you can handle the heat/humidity.

While many people say they "love" the heat, its ok for a temporary stay, like vacation. However, if you are living in it for months, it is hard to take.

Remember, living in a place is not the same as taking a vacation there.

I live in the Midwest. Every February when I've had it with the ice and snow and frigid temperatures I think about moving to Florida.  Then in the middle of July I think "I could never live in Florida" and I can't wait for fall and for the humidity to end.

Actually, anyone thinking of moving to Florida should rent a place from May 1 - Dec. 1 before making a final decision.

You will get a taste of the rainy season (heat, humidity, daily afternoon thunderstorms) and hurricane season.  If you think the gas pipeline was a debacle, ha, just wait for the panic buying of gas, food and ice when a hurricane is going to hit.  No gas anywhere and bare shelves in the grocery stores. It's everyone for themselves.  Oh, and FEMA no longer brings ice so all your food in the frig will spoil in a couple of days without power.

After six months of relentless suffocating heat, you will be praying to the weather gods for that first cold front to make it to Florida in December.

Re: Wanting to move to Florida- question/ disappointed

I am ONLY going to comment on the weather:

If you grew up in the Deep South, VA, DC, MD and maybe Jersey (depends on where you Jersey it is), you will have no problem with the weather in Florida. Summer, for us, NO DIFFERENT than in MD. In fact, it's nicer. Yep, its. High heat all day (where we grew up and in on the farms near Lake Anna. VA with NO air conditioning), a quick thunderstorm every single afternoon (hop out of the pool, wait for the whistle, everyone back in), back to heat, 100% humidity for 3-4 months non-stop....that's MD. So far, we haven't had the 100 degrees in Florida (maybe this year) and the humidity doesn't seem as high plus there's a breeze.....and we're pretty far inland. The hurricanes mean high winds, lightening and some rain but that's it (People evacuate to where we are as per the schools and community leaders). If you've ever been to Washington DC during the months of May through September, you have an idea of what Florida is like during the summer.

I know many who have moved to MD and couldn't handle the summer. Ever. Didn't mean anything that the weather cooled down significantly come Fall and Winter, the simply couldn't handle the humidity and trying to breathe/be active during the summer....it was very difficult for them. Have to say to, we hate having the AC on all the time (rental requires it to be 72 year round). We spend more time sitting outside than inside come (screened back porch) because we prefer the fresh air. A neighbor yelled one day "Ya'll MUST be from the South  because they're the only ones who don't mind our summers!"

Personally, we think MD/DC/VA is HOTTER than Florida, lol.

This year, you have actually experienced Florida summers already!  Never seen it this hot this time of year.

Usually we have an evening breeze and often a quick shower that kools it off nicely in the evenings.

My aunt used to live there.  Only move there if you like heat, humidity and bugs!

I partially agree with @pieman. I live in SE Florida for 35 years.  Just like most residents, most doctors come here from the northeast states. These doctors relocate for one reason only, money, there's a never ending supply of senior medicare patients.  It's common knowledge that only the worst doctors relocate here.  God forbid you develop anything rare, they don't know what to do. Except lie to you, to suck up your insurance. They only are capable of textbook medical situations.  I won't bore you with my own medical horror stories here. Any of the rare decent doctors here freely admit the Univ of Miami, the only teaching hospital around, will hurt you more than heal you.

People with money generally travel back up north to get quality healthcare.  Sure, seniors here can demand good medical care all they want, it doesn't mean they get it.
