Edited to say never mind. I found an article. http://www.kcci.com/news/walmart-says-its-closing-154-stores-in-usa/37454210
******************************
From the source above.
It doesn't seem to be the econmy, it's the competition and their apparently failed smaller stores. That's capitalism.
"The announcement comes three months after its CEO Doug McMillon told investors the world's largest retailer would review its store fleet in amid increasing competition from all fronts, including from online rival Amazon.com.
In the U.S., 154 locations will be closed, most of them, 102 stores, are small format stores called Walmart Express, which were launched as a test program in 2011. Part of the closings are 23 Neighborhood Markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam's Clubs."

It's not the economy folks, it's competition and failed start-ups.
See report above highlighted in blue.

I feel bad for the employees. 60 days severance isn't much.

I live in an area with a lot of 55+ developments. There is a big 24 hr. Walmart close by and another smaller one is being built 1000 ft. up the road. I guess we 55+ folks like to spend $ in Walmart.

Two of the express stores they are closing are within a couple miles of me in one City (Chicago). I never understood why they bothered with these 'express' stores, it was basically the same thing as the Walgreens that was literally across the street from both of those locations.
No matter to me, I have never stepped foot in a walmart. I've just always been a target girl for big household shopping and walgreens for quick shopping.
ETA: I think 60 days of severance is quite generous, considering where it's coming from... I have known plenty of people who have been laid off from all different jobs over the years (both retail and higher level professional) and 60 days isn't bad at all. I do hope everyone finds a new job soon.

They have lots of stores and this is about 1%. They said on CNBC today they will open over 100 new ones in the USA. There are some really old ones around that need closing. This doesn't reflect badly on the economy at all.
The real culprit is the low price of oil. Who knew that it being so low can hurt the economy.

Sams Clubs are closing in my area. never went into Sam's but 3 are closing within 25 miles of each other. the Target a mile from the Sam's had barely any inventory a few days ago. there are two Targets within 3 miles of each other. one of them may close.
other than Sam's we have only regular WM and most have recently added their grocery sections.

Even if you don't patronize WM, this makes a huge statement about our economy. Couple that with more significant losses in the stock market today and it looks like a rough stretch is coming again. My worry meter has gone up a little.
The stores include Express stores, SuperCenters, regular Walmarts, Sam's Clubs, and Amigos.
They actually said that although they are closing this many stores, they will be opening even MORE than they closed in the very near future. They said it is more about re-adjusting their markets than a reflection that the company is hurting financially. They also said that they will be focusing more on online commerce since that is where shopping is leaning more towards.

I went to a Walmart ONCE 20 years ago....it was such an awful atmosphere and experience, ( the people, the filth). I never went back again. I would not miss them at all if they went out of business.

Two are closing in my general area. Both of them are on the small side, both are inside shopping malls, but neither are close to other Walmarts. Interestingly, both are in traditionally economically depressed neighborhoods where a large general population would not shop.
