Do you think their experiment will work and we will be losing even more chances of a live person checking our groceries?
The CAs who staff Walmart's stores have literally put their lives on the line, working through the virus, which is everpresent now. A self-checkout-only store will have some staff to watch for theft and help with malfunction and customer error, and someone's got to stock and zone. But it still will mean fewer jobs, and I do not support it and hope labor-minded people don't either, at least until we get a major job training and public works program going.
If you want to have cashiers available, do not use self-checkout. Ever.
Fall 2020 and winter 2021 are going to be very rough. Let's not make it rougher for people who can least afford it. This is the worst time for Walmart to be rolling this out. Shame on them. But thanks for the info, @lovesrecess .

Just like I can tell my grandchildren now that I remember in the last 10 yrs someone checked out the groceries, a second person packed them, and a third person took them to my car.
p.s. I only want to self-check out. I hate it when I have to go through a line these days. Just more exposure and someone handling my stuff and all those before me.
i use to like it when there was someone to pump your gas... I HATE pumping gas.

I went to Walmart yesterday and the self check out line was quite long. I almost always use self check out. Now that I think of it, I don't think any of the cashier"d" lanes were open. The self check out line went across the pathway of people walking in, and into the bakery section. If they stick with this, they will have to re-route the line. I NEVER have a grocery cart full of food when shopping at Walmart. Now if they did that at Publix, I think I would complain about that, as that would take a lot longer to get out of the store.

I am totally against this!!

I know it's crazy, but when I think about self-checkout and bagging (which I do occasionally), I think, Here I'm choosing the merchandise, checking it out myself, bagging it, and paying for it.
They should pay me as an employee!

I saw this story. All I can say is, I hoep it doesn't come to my local store. I do not use self checkout and will not UNTIL I get a discount on my purchases for doing the work. Part of the price I pay is for someone to ring me up and bag my purchases.

The touch screen will be germy if not cleaned after each use as will the scale on the scanner to weigh vegetables. When we scan we don't touch any part of that unless we are buying fresh vegetables and then have no choice. Before the pandemic they were seldom cleaned and probably only once a day. Not enough man power I would think, to do it after each customer. Wear gloves but then take them off and throw out before you open your car door (not on the parking lot)... I always look for their nearest trash can as we are leaving.

@kam24 wrote:I only use self check out. I hate using a cashier. (And, yes, I am "older").
There are 2 main reasons:
First, I prefer to bag my own grocercies. I am tired of cans being bagged with produce, etc. If I go through a line and a bagger comes up, I have to insist to bag my own and sometimes they insist and I have to insist back. So, it is just easier to go thru self scan and not deal with the argument.
I also bag to "location" in the house...some items go in the pantry and I prefer those togerther so I can bring the bag into the pantry and unload. Same with freezer and fridge items. I have a freezer in the basement and I prefer those items together (bring the bag straight downstairs) and the upstairs fridge and freezer items in another bag. It is just more efficient for me.
Second, in almost every trip, there are items that scan the wrong price or a sale does not appear. If I am scanning myself, I can see it right away and get it fixed on the spot. When using a cashier, it is hard to catch the price until I see the receipt. Then I have to go to the customer service desk. It happens more than you would think.
I am pretty quick going through self-scan and like it so much better. But, I also feel that there should be a choice. Cashiers should be available.
I totally agree with you about the bagging issues not only at Walmart but at our grocery store as well.....I have been using Instacart and their bagging is SUPERB!!! Why cant Walmart and the grocery stores do this....But when I go back and venture into a store the insane bagging issue is one thing I wont like at all and would prefer Self-Check...
Another issue is the Walmart closest to me has rude and inconsiderate employees----they argue with one another as to who should be at a register and who should be stocking, others are in a bad mood, and one time a cashier left the register to help a cute make customer that needed a price check, and if that wasnt bad enough, she then let him cut in line to check him out first despite people who had already been waiting in a long line....SMH!!! For these reasons Im all for SELF CHECK at WALMART!!!

I think that this is just the way that things are going to be, where it's going to be more self-service for us.
I've also seen those kiosks in some of the fast food restaurants where you can order your food yourself from the kiosk, without having to go up to the counter to order your food.
At Walmart, they have the device at the self-service scan areas that is a hand-held scanner that you can remove from its holder so that you can scan larger and more difficult hard-to-scan items.
It's actually really convenient to use and does a really quick job of scanning items.
We don't mind using the self-serve scanners if they're convenient enough to use.
Some of them are so touchy though, that if you accidentally lean up against them with your coat or purse, it sets them off in the wrong way, and a cashier will have to come up and reset it.
You can tell that we've had that kind of an experience with some of them!

The Walmarts near me offer 3 options for checkout:
* self check-out
*scanner self check-out
*full service with someone checking you out
I have no issue with the first two EXCEPT.... as someone mentioned, there is a very small amount of space for this. Doesn't work for large orders. So, this is what I do: I grab a full size cart and stick it at one side. My cart is on the side. And then I ring up my items, bag them as I see fit, place them on the floor around me if necessary and load the 2nd cart in order of heavy to light. I don't care if I get looks or glances or any side-eye from Walmart people. You want me to use this? FIne, but until you provide ENOUGH SPACE for a customer to unload, ring and reload all their items, I'm going to do it my way.
I've had to say this to a Walmart person twice in 10 years...maybe? One was to a Walmart person running the area and another was to a guy in a shirt and tie who was a floor manager (or some type of manager). He sniffed and then walked away (probably calling me some name under his breath). Long hair, don't care, buddy.*flips hair*
