@ECBG When Walmart removed the cashiers they didn't lay anyone off. They were reassigned to other parts of the stores. In fact, they been aggressively trying to hire new employees. In my state, despite several forms of bribery, they can't get people to work.
@Kachina624 This is the scenario in our Walmarts too. Most of the cashiers are now working on filling online orders. They are hiring, not laying people off. However, I'm not going to bag a large grocery order, so I shop elsewhere.

I know a manager of a Kroger in another city. He said the problem with the self-checkout stands is the software needs to be updated very often and corporate is slow to get it to stores. There is an older man in his 70's who is a cashier where I shop and he is fast as lightning when checking out customers. Can't imagine how long he has been doing this. Very cordial and he knows how to check for prices and coupons don't phase him. He is worth waiting in line for when I have a basketful of items.

Hopefully, all stores will reassign employees and not attempt to "freeze them out" by giving them not enough hours.

I think that if you use self check outs you should get a percentage off on all items. Ten percent sounds good, but no less than that.

In your dreams probably, @chickenbutt, but I agree that the customer should receive a discount for doing the work 😏

If stores are going to go to self-checkout, they need to make those check-outs the same as the ones that have a cashier. None of the stores I shop in that have self-checkout are set up to handle a cartful of groceries. They are set up for about 12 items our less.

My local Stop and Shop has the mobile scanners, you scan each item as you shop. Or you can do that via the app. Then you use the self checkout.
That can easily handle a cart full of groceries. They audit to watch out for theft. And they have that annoying robot roaming the store and watching people.
