About 18 months ago I stopped at a Walmart I rarely shop at and there was only one cashier working with several employees standing by the self checkout area, telling people to come over and they'd help them get them checked out. I just happened to be annoyed and in a mood to debate, and asked one of the employees to get the store manager over here, and we wanted to talk to them.
After listening to this manager tell us that the stores were going to all self-checkout, I said what's next ... are we also going to have to start unloading trucks, too?
I mean c'mon .... what has happened to providing good customer service?

We almost never shop Wal-Mart. The non-food items we need are readily available at our local chain.
Food shopping was never done at Wal-Mart, either.
It is a different world today. People expecting live cashiers need to readjust their perceptions of reality.
Online shopping with the convenience of curb-side pickup and/or delivery is becoming more popular-perhaps enhanced because of COVID.
We can say we will not use self-checkouts because we support jobs but that is a false pov. Using a live cashier is not saving jobs because the PTB determine jobs, not the customers.
We are becoming a society of the faceless and the nameless.

I shop Walmart, though not for groceries. I don't mind using self checkouts, have done it often. Refusing to use them isn't really saving jobs, as a poster pointed out. A person can complain all they want, but self checkout is here, so might as well get used to it.

Our local Walmart stores added lots of self check out options about a year ago , but still have a few regular lanes still in place. I must admit, I was NOT a fan of the self check out option at first, but I find it easier and quicker for me even with a large basket of groceries.

Our local small town store upgraded their self serve and it is easier with produce now. Big green lights added to keep lines moving. If I have alot of produce that can't be scanned I go to a regular check out. Alcohol like beer needs approval and a wait at times. Coupons are more work.
They are so in need of employees that some times only two cashiers. I just heard a supervisor tell one someone wasn't coming in to work. Schools starting has really affected employees available to work in my area. Many early closings and cutting services in a number of stores and businesses. DQ closes at 8 pm. as Deli and counters. I agree more Self Serve coming.

Criminals love self check-out stands. They are too easy to install card skimmers into the checkout machine. There are ones on all 12 of the self checkout stands at the WM near me. People are prompted to use them, since of the 30 cashier lanes they have, usually only one or two or open.

The self checkouts have had too many instances of credit card skimmers being in them, so probably shoppers want to avoid the risk of their card numbers being stolen. Standing in a long line for a cashier isn't fun but it's better than having my checking account drained or dealing with a stolen credit card number.

I wonder if Walmart will make the customers stock the shelves too ?? Because right now the employees are not doing a good job keeping the shelves stocked.

@ECBG When Walmart removed the cashiers they didn't lay anyone off. They were reassigned to other parts of the stores. In fact, they been aggressively trying to hire new employees. In my state, despite several forms of bribery, they can't get people to work.
