this is good news!!
Target and Walmart—synonymous with super discounted prices on everything from soap and cereal to side tables—recently announced an expansion of their organic and natural offerings, especially in the food category. (Within 24 hours of each other, no less.)
Target unveiled their Made to Matter collection of packaged goods, including brands they currently carry—such as Method, Horizon Organic, Yes To, Kashi, and Annie’s—but with new, exclusive products such an air freshener actually powered by air (as opposed to aerosol). “We noticed from our research that the Target consumer wants organic and natural products, but they are usually more expensive,” says Jessica Stevens, a Target spokesperson. “This makes it easier to find better-for-you options.” Items are already in stores.
For similar reasons, Walmart says it will start carrying Wild Oats, an almost-entirely-organic label previously owned by Whole Foods (can you say “halo effect”?). It will stock about 100 different products at prices at least 25 percent cheaper than its competitors. Expect to see them in about 2,000 stores nationwide soon. (We reached out to Walmart for further details, but we didn’t hear back after several attempts.)

The article does bring up some good points at the end of the article and this should be something that the eco-friendly/organic consumers should watch on and ensure that anything that these big-box stores try to do with regulations are not going to reverse the organic/natural criteria.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart, but I shop at Target.
I've noticed a lot of organic items there. Costco has a lot of organic produce too.
I'm kind of surprised about Wild Oats being sold at Wal Mart now. Since Mariano's (Roundy's) opened up in my neighborhood, I don't really need to go to Whole Foods anymore.

That's good news, IMO, as most people would buy organic if it were cheaper. With giants like Target and Walmart involved, hopefully their buying power will help to make organic more affordable to the average consumer.

I am hoping that we will get a Target in our area one day - I hate to travel 20 miles to one!!
I do go to Costco, Trader Joes and at times, Whole Foods. My local grocery stores are great with the organic items as well. There is a Wegman's opening up around here - anyone ever shop at one of those? It opens today and there were traffic signs saying that traffic would be heavier with this grand opening - lol

My Super Walmart already has organic food but it is still too expensive imo.

I've always heard good things about Wegman's. We don't have any in our area.
I love Publix (Southern grocery store).
I stopped going to Trader Joe's - I realized I spend way more money there because of the packaging. LOL

i agree. the price is what people complain about the most. our Kroger grocery stores also have expanded their organic food selection so i think that may be happening!

Are you talking about the new Wegman's opening at Chestnut Hill? I've been hearing radio ads about them lately. There's also a new one planned at Burlington, but I believe it's still in the construction phase.
I had heard so much about Wegman's, that I took a couple of trips to the store in Northboro. It's a nice store and they have wonderful organic produce and grocery items; much more than the average store. As far as prices, I can do much better at Market Basket which has all other chains beat, but Wegman's is unique enough so that I can see myself shopping at both in the future.
