Cobra prices are outrageously expensive. Not to worry, you're close to 65 will have Medicare available to you. Also the option of ACA.

Large companies are heartless. Don't expect much. Good luck.

ITA. COBRA will eat up a lot of your severance. Don't waste it on COBRA; try to get on ACA asap.

Yes, large companies can be heartless. If a mass layoff is in the offing, they won't negotiate with you on the severance unless you are top C-level. You get what everyone else gets.

COBRA for me was about $50 more expensive than an ACA plan for me. Again, worth checking out.

{#emotions_dlg.sad} I didn't realize it (ACA) was THAT expensive. When I had to go on COBRA, it was a killer. I haven't had to go back on it for years now...guess it isn't as bad compared with ACA as I thought. Ugh.

Madame, I feel your pain. I hope things work out the way you and DH wish them to. DH's company went through a major upheaval this week and I was very worried. DH's in his 50's and not ready to even consider retirement. He did survive thank the Lord. Others are not so lucky today and I feel their pain. Good luck!!!

So sorry this is happening to you. I elected to retire & asked for the Golden Handshake. My employer continued to pay my insurance until I reached Medicare age. Hoping your hubby won't be included in the lay-off.

Would he get a severance package? 2 weeks for every year of work?

I was looking at a top-tier ACA plan, in my 60s and I do not qualify for a subsidy. My payment is not bad at all and I am happy to have insurance since I have preconditions. Mine is nowhere close to $800 that someone mentioned earlier.

Re: Waiting on pins and needles,,,,

if health insurance is the only issue he will be able to get you COBRA for 18 months then the ACA marketplace has any number of options for you to chose. If the COBRA is too expensive you could go direct to the healthcare marketplace and chose an affordable option there. Since the passing of O care there are many better options than when I retired in 2008.

It is not always this expensive - this person chose to get a premium plan and that is costly but there are many much more affordable options.

Re: Waiting on pins and needles,,,,

I didn't read the other posts, but wish you best of luck with this. You should be COBRA eligible, but when we last used it, it was very expensive.

Healthcare is in the forefront of most people's minds today. My husband's company is negotiating their latest contract, and switching insurance providers. Makes us nervous, as what we have is good, and we like it. Asking lots of questions at this time, and I think many people are when it comes to HC and cost and how to navigate it.

Best of luck.
