@qualitygal That's bizarre! We must have conjured it up! Did hubby already know what zone meant in the song?

I remember not having to include the area code in a phone number, which was seven, not ten, digits, but that's about it...

I remember and even a house address was not used since there were none. It was our first and last names and the words Route 5. Up to the mail carrier to find us. LOL And believe it or not much better mail service then. And our mail distribution center was in our local area not all the way to the biggest city.

Living in a town not a city, we did not have a zone. Just the town and the state got us our mail. Then in '63 we got a zip code.
In the very early 70s the letters at the beginning of our phone number started to be called by their corresponding numbers -- so "H" became 4 (for example). The number stayed the same -- just the way we said it changed. No fun exchange name. I miss the exchange name still -- the # was easier to remember that way.

Yes and area codes I remember I was a teem maybe when they started zip codes, but it wasn't enforced for a few years. Then I remember a letter came
back with because of it. Had to buy another stamp, that set in my mind.
I also remember when we dialed phones. I don't remember we had area codes assigned back then. Just dialing the first 2 letters of name. Like YOrkshire 6-0321. or. LAndscape 9-1111. They always had these scenic sounding names. I remember calling Operator to place long distance, an address, phone number. They did everything! Do they have them anymore?

"Operator, would you help me place this call?
See... the number on the matchbook is old and faded."

Hail yeah! Zip codes, area codes, Morse code...
I also faintly remember Pony Express! Oh, wait, that was a movie I saw.

Just to summarize:
Area codes began in NJ in 1951, then rolled out over the rest of the country.
ZIP codes in 1963.
