Very important warning for bird owners -- if you get a new stove, please know that the oven will emit toxic fumes for the first several uses. This will kill your birds. The same problem applies to self cleaning ovens. Never use the self cleaning oven feature if you have a bird in your house.
I just moved into a new apartment in our town's elderly complex -- I was thrilled to see that the kitchen appliances were all new. I baked a potato one evening, and the fumes started. I immediately moved my bird to the bedroom and closed the door. I turned the fan above the stove on and placed another fan on the floor -- opened the kitchen window. I had to leave my poor bird in the bedroom for three hours.
When I told our maintenance man that I wouldn't be able to use my oven and why, he was so accommodating. He moved my stove to an empty apt. and let it run all day for three days to get rid of the fumes. In the meantime, I had the use of the older stove which he moved from that apt. to mine. I now have my own stove back without any fumes.
