I volunteered as a counselor to inmates in a correctional facility. I felt very strongly that it was part of my work here on earth.....not easy, but grateful for the opportunity.

I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. I have learned a lot about home restoration that has helped me too. We had an all woman crew that built a home from scratch. My son and I wrote, shot & produced a PSA for their Re-Store locations. I helped get it placed at no charge on TV.
I also volunteer in marketing Buffalo Garden Walk and Urban Roots (a local garden store co-op).

The most rewarding project I've worked on so far was replacing/revamping the accounting system for a non-profit. It took me the better part of a year, but it was totally worth it. They really needed tighter controls and better reporting. They wouldn't have been able to do it if they'd had to pay someone to do it.
I worked for a non-profit and volunteers doing what you did and offering other expertise was invaluable to our being able to serve our community.

DH & I both volunteered in a local Cat Shelter (no kill type) in 1992. I had to stop as I developed asthma but DH still does it.

I volunteer for a living. That is my job. I take it very seriously, I'm thorough, reliable and I get it done. I've made a name for myself and get asked to help with various organizations.
I love meeting all of the people who enjoy doing the same things I do!
I just got done working on a fundraising project which was a huge success.

I also regularly go to this shelter and take out dogs for walks in the park (had to go through a training program on this one). I love to take photos of the dogs in the park with me, and they have often been used on the adoption site.
The other shelter, I provide free computer support.
Both are "real work" but a true labor of love.
Kudos to you! I volunteer at my local shelter and am the crazy cat lady but love all species. I consider it "work" since I make sure it is my first priority. We had people come in for a few days and then not show up, etc. I'm retired so shelter comes first and then I plan my other activities.
