Has anyone else been hearing lots of news stories about this? (Local news/FOX news)

If so, maybe you would be able to answer my questions...

1) how do the scammers get the person's (or your child's) voice in the first place?

2) in the situation that is being presented on my local news station, a woman receives a call FROM HER SISTER'S PHONE NUMBER-- her sister supposedly in distress and asking for immediate help...I believe her "sister" was asking for money?

3) I do not understand why there would be a productive need for an app such as this?

If there is no productive use why not just outlaw use of these?

Scammers will do anything and everything to suck in people. If voice cloning works, they'll try it.

My dad received a call saying my son was in jail in Nebraska and needed bail. I happened to walk in while he was on the phone and called my son. Yup, my son was safe and sound.

The latest scam I heard was that a person's bank was calling because of fraud. They asked for personal information to verify the person. Banks don't do that.

Google is recording phone calls. I was advised that the call I had placed using a search result was going to be recorded. I hung up. Our voice print is going to get out there. Be wary.

Bold and the Beautiful did a story arc about an app that cloned voices. Something inspired that storyline. I know it has to be AI related. This makes not answering unknown calls even more important. If you do answer and they start their sales pitch, say nothing!  Hang up. This is not being rude. It is being smart.

We were just at our bank a few days ago and the bank employee we were dealing with told us that right before we came in she was handling a situation where a customer received a call that had that bank's name on his caller ID.

Thinking it was the bank he answered the phone and was told that fraud was being committed on his account and they needed his banking information to try and catch the person or persons. Unfortunately he gave them just what they needed to empty his accounts.  Sadly he will probably never see that money again.

Of course the bank employee did not reveal this customers name or any information about him she just wanted to warn us that this scam is now happening in our area and be aware of it.

We never answer our phone no matter what name or number is listed on caller ID.  We would wait for them to leave a voice mail.  If we felt that it was important we would call them back on the number that we have for them.  We would never call back the number they leave for us.

I feel so bad for this gentleman who had his accounts emptied but what I couldn't understand was this happened on a Sunday afternoon.  Why would he have ever thought that a bank would call him on a Sunday.  That would have been a huge red flag for me.

All I can assume is that he was possibly an older man or he just became confused about what day it was and these criminals preyed on his fear.

These lowlife people are just the scum of the earth.  I can't even imagine how anyone could live with themselves after taking someone's life savings.  Of course criminals just want to line their own pockets and where the money comes from is of no concern to them.

@LTT1   I can't answer your question, but I have always been a big listener of am talk radio.

I'd take my radio outside and listen while gardening, or wore ear buds when I walked.

Years ago when listening to Glen Beck he did a segment on voice cloning, I thought, what the heck, could that be true, and here we are years later, yes it is true.

He has done many shows on controversial topics, food is one segment was also years ago, and yet here we are with our food being 'treated'.

I am sure there are a lot of people that do not like him and will be negative about him but, frankly, I don't care - he has been right about many, many things I heard him say.

My friends and family always tease me about my radio listening habits, no one they know listens to am radio.  I also listened from 12-3 when I could...another controversial host, sadly gone.

Who knew? I might need to start listening to AM talk radio again!

So many things predicted in the past are becoming reality. Who ever thought we could carry phones that would hold everything our computers did?

This site which I'd like to share I just happened upon recently. I signed up for emails from them. They are a non-profit! Lots of chemicals are mentioned that are considered unsafe in our foods.

Good podcast episode from the Podcast "Planet Money" about this subject. "AI Podcast 2.0 the Host in the Machine" is the title of the episode. You can hear the AI trained on the host's voice and then take over a part of the show. You'll learn how it works too. You'll learn how it could be used for unsavory purposes. Highly informative episode on the good and the bad.

Quoted from the description of this episode:

"On today's show, we explore the world of AI-generated voices, which have become so lifelike in recent years that they can credibly imitate specific people. To test the limits of the technology, we attempt to create our own synthetic voice by training a computer on recordings of former Planet Money host Robert Smith. Then we introduce synthetic Robert to his very human namesake."

@Mom2Dogs

Thank you for letting me know!

I do believe whoever keeps up with these scams has their hands full. Technology is a blessing in many ways but also they preset new problems.

''In the news stories I watched, one was a DC politician. Their voices can be found everywhere, so i uderstand their concerns.

'In the local news story, the woman not only did the criminals copy her VOICE, but they also called (Supposedly) from her own sisters NUMBERS.
