It's not odd at all and it's not "some" people.

Without a car, you may not be able to get where you need to get; that car is important for you to get to work, make money to take care of family, etc.

Without a cell phone, you couldn't call for help in the past; now you can. You can record the wrongdoing of society when in the past, you couldn't. That cell phone is pretty important.

That gun could save your life if necessary. Without, you could die. That's pretty powerful.

You could say the same thing about medication, health insurance, airplanes, TV's, computers, etc. They offer options that are not available without them. That's pretty darn powerful for an object. Now, you can choose to USE them or not, but that doesn't take their power away from them.

“That gun could save your life...”

I can guarantee, without a doubt, no one (without lengthy active

professional training) would know how to react if totally out of the blue,

without any warning, a bullet would whizz by your head.

City police departments have lengthy psychology testing

for their officers who might have to take a life to save their own.

To make those split-second decisions, it takes a skill only a

special group of individuals have.

That is incorrect @sidsmom . When we lived in Pa there was an elderly gentleman who was riding his bike in one of the town parks. Three high school boys who should have been in school went looking for trouble instead and unfortunately found it. The elderly man defended himself - one boy was killed, one was shot and treated, and one ran away. The police did not charge the elderly man for defending himself.
