Re: Virginia Beach shootings

[ Edited ]

As far as I can see via this thread and every other one when guns are involved, there is the group that chants "ban the guns ban the guns ban the guns".

Say it happened (can't imagine it) but let's say it did. What if that didn't stop the carnage? It hasn't stopped the drug crisis, has it? It hasn't stopped the sex trade or child pornography (which shows usage is up in record numbers and which the US leads the world in importing); then what?

Many states have extremely strict gun laws; mine is one of them. And yet, look at Baltimore City. Illinois has the same gun laws; look at Chicago (50 people shot in the past 24 hours, 10 dead). Those who don't care about the laws WILL get them be it booze (hello prohibition) drugs (hello opioid nightmare) and guns.

Again, why not find out what is driving this instead of just saying "No XYZ for YOU!".

Because that takes time, effort and money as well as empathy and compassion. All things as a society we are woefully short of IMHO.

Or we could do what Chris Rock has said in his standup routine:

”I think all bullets should cost five thousand dollars.

Five thousand per bullet.

You know why?

Cause if a bullet cost five thousand dollars,

there would be no more innocent bystanders.”

It was part of his humorous standup routine.

but there’s something smart, really smart, about this thought.

All our Rights would remain in place...but it would take a

concerted effort to injure/kill people w/ a five thousand dollar bullet.

Re: Virginia Beach shootings

@sidsmom  Go for it. Ammo isn't cheap to begin with but raise the price even more. Those I know don't stockpile OR they make their own.

The thing is, NEITHER of those two suggestions are realistic (banning or making bullets a thousand bucks a piece). So instead of going over the top, how about employing additional, doable, realistic ideas (like finding out the why) while making changing those to states where it's easy to walk in and get what one needs to engage in another nightmare like Virginia Beach?

Extreme anything NEVER works and rarely happens. And criminals would STILL find a way to get what they need AND make money in the process.

Re: Virginia Beach shootings

A madman used the leg of s wooden chair to try and murder my sister.
When someone has intentions to kill they will use whatever it takes to accomplish their goal
So I don’t accept the leg of a chair is different then a gun. Murder is murder period

@SahmIam  Well stated... Like I've said many times, outlawing anything people are determined to get does not work... There is always going to be a work-around... Not even to mention the fact that you can make laws but enforcement of them is a whole other ballgame...

We spend billions trying to eradicate the drug trade and in all probability the cartels sit back and get a big guffaw out of money not so well spent...

All that said, in some places, guns are too readily available and trying to tighten that up probably couldn't hurt, as long as innumerable dollars aren't allocated to schemes destined to fail...

Another sad,  horror and it will keep sadly happening. Something has to be done! These people did not have to die in vain like this.Woman Sad my prayers go out for the families and friends of the wounded and  the dead.

I guess shooting stats since 2018 to date,

over 500 killed & almost 2000 injured is not considered

‘going over the top.’

Got it.

Re: Virginia Beach shootings

So I guess unless you can prevent 100% of all tragedies like this, it just isn't worth doing.

I guess just preventing 1 tragedy, saving 1 life just isn't worth it.

Re: Virginia Beach shootings

I must've missed something.  I'm the poster on page 2 who posted the FBI stats about mass shootings.  700 dead over the course of 17 years.  The source was the FBI.

I would be happy to do something, but the shooter is dead.  I don't see what else can be done.

People have been killing each other as long as there have been people.  We are a clever and creative species.  Humans have used rocks and knives and guns and airplanes and hatchets and fire and all manner of devices to kill.

Twisted, evil human beings are the problem.  If you can figure out how to solve that problem, I'm all ears.

@Oostende

But the sole purpose of a gun/firearm is to be used for

one thing and one thing only.
