I would change this to:

The art of being happy is being content with who you are.

Her comment is much better than your FB drivel @151949

I can think of many situations where, if you told someone to be content with what they have, you would be killing their hopes and dreams.

Don't be so quick to swallow platitudes, they are usually soft-soap only.

All of the drivvel written on what I thought was just a nice , positive, innocent post !!

But your post is definitely the one I find to be the most positive and correct.

Some may not be in agreement with the thoughts of others, that's fine, just as it should be acceptable that some who posted didn't agree with the cliche-

Someone stated earlier that if it was said the sky was blue, others would argue-maybe it isn't an argument at all -maybe they've looked up at the sky and the sky is orange or yellow where they are-does it mean no one has shared a truth?  Nope-

But, that's just my drivel-

There is a difference between expressing a different point of view and belittling someone who has a different point of view.

Re: Very true saying from facebook.....

I would say the rest of that statement in the op is...

And not always looking at what others have and wanting it. Not always looking at what others have and thinking that would make you happy. And not always assessing yourself and your life by comparing that to others. The sure road to unhappiness for me consists of all of that.

Of course "what you have" consists of much more than material things. We need food and shelter and all those important things. But without something like health for example, any material things and comforts and luxuries are meaningless.

And of course I would never expect the poor and struggling to just accept platitudes and be happy with them.

The quote states being happy is 'being content with what you have'. And this is profound, if you understand what it is you have.

Most people look at it as things, money, status, good health...you know, all the good things that make a life good or easier. That isn't even the beginning of what we have.

We have the ability to hope. We have the ability to dream. We have the ability to change and make change. We have the ability to grow. We have the ability to help. We have the ability to be helped. We have the ability to adapt. We have the ability to love and be loved.

With all that we really have, what is there NOT to be happy about.

I agree with you 100 percent @handygal2. For too many people who they are is what they have. And therein lies the root of so much unhappiness and so many problems.

Again I'm talking about people who have the basic necessities, not those who don't.

Being content with who you are is the best happiness imaginable imo. As is knowing that no one else can affect that knowledge and contentment , no matter how hard they try.

It would also not fit for a woman who has an abusive husband. Telling her to be content with what she has would be awful.
