Are these families following specified rules?
Are those families breaking any laws?
"...fill out an application & do not need to send anything with it
to prove your income."
If rules are followed & no laws are broken,
don't blame the families....blame the system in place.

Only in America does a child have to apply for a breakfast and lunch program based on income while my tax dollars feed criminals for no charge to them!!!!! I say feed them for free. Wake up America and get your priorities in line!

I guess the old adage - There but for the grace of God go I. - has gone by the wayside for some.

You summed it up beautifully, Jilly!

The issue is with the system. It's absurd that there's no income verification for this. While it is also terrible that parents who can afford the lunch could be taking advantage of the system, many people don't have the same moral backbone as others. Having said this, when I was in public school, we were provided with books, crayons, pencils, and transportation to school. I'm not sure why there was a line drawn with lunch, but to me, lunch seems up there with these other items in terms of being a necessity in order for a child to function in a school day.

Even if that means its at the expense of books and educational supplies?
So then either teachers should continue to pay out of pocket for these - or what? Raise property taxes more? But if the parents can't afford food, can they afford higher taxes - she did say some of those on free lunch are homeowners - do you want them to lose their homes for taxes they can't pay?
I was an upper level school administrator, I can tell you that funding for free and reduced lunch is a federal program,. It does not affect the local school budgets. In my state, applications require a social security number and income is verified through that. A school secretary would not have that knowledge.
Thanks for posting this information. It makes sense to me.

I can't imagine there is no income verificqtion for a free-lunch program.

Criminals get not only food, health care, dental care, clothes, education and get paid for their "work".
