Sunscreen is still the top protection against sun rays.
I do see people from time to time, especially at bus stops, with umbrellas and most use black ones.
I agree. An umbrella makes the suns rays feel less hot but unless it is made of fabric that is treated with some type of sunscreen, it affords next to no protection from the sun's damage.

@muttmom Black umbrellas will absorb most of the UV rays - that is you feel hotter in dark clothing - especially the color black - it is absorbing the rays.
There are treated umbrellas but if using just a plain ol' umbrella get it in black.

I truly cannot imagine carrying an umbrella in the sun. It seems like it would be a cumbersome nuisance.
But, if it works for anyone and they're comfortable with it. Go for it!

You also need to protect yourself when driving or riding in a car.

Good point and people often forget that even in the winter months the sun's rays are harmful.

You must not live where you are out in the sun walking, at fairs and garage sales, etc. or public events, when the temps range from 85-105 for many months of the year. It's not in any way a nuisance if one uses a lightweight collapsible umbrella. But if it were a bit of a pain I'd still do it, rather than skip going to events I enjoy attending, or need EMT assistance for heat exhaustion/heatstroke.

@Mz iMac Your umbrella hat reminded me of the last time I saw one in use. We were traveling across the Navajo Reservation near Shiprock, NM. We stopped to give the dog a break. There was a large flock of sheep being tended by a Navajo on an ATV, assisted by a llama. The Indian was wearing an umbrella hat. There was something about the juxtaposition of all these things with the magnificent monolith Shiprock in the background that struck as very funny. I guess it was the contrast of the ancient with the very modern that seemed so strange.

Although rare, on occasion, we get brutally hot days. Days in the early 100F range. That's when the umbrellas come out. I remember one terrible day on campus. It was about 103F, Almost every person I saw (students, faculty and otherwise) was carrying an umbrella. That's about the only thing I use it for. Funny part was that when it's raining, not that many umbrellas are up. Just kids wearing slickers, etc.
