I have never been able to tolerate the sun... no sun worshipping from me so YES, I have and do use an umbrella to keep the sun off my head and face. I also use sunscreen, always over 50 and I have a tube of 100 just waiting to be used!
My youngest son was graduating from middle school and the event was going to be held in the broiling Southern California sun in June on a 90 degree day! There was no way I could sit in the sun for an hour for the ceremonies (I'd end up in the ER!).... so I brought my special little red folding chair with the attached sun shade and sat to the side of the main chairs for the event!
I've done this ever since I can remember.... ![]()

I'm back for the evening! Thank you, World Traveler, Cotton Ball, and the poster with the photo of the umbrella hat! In case I missed/forgot others with excellent suggestions, a big thank you! It was warm today, so I used a very small, lightweight, fold-up/retractable umbrella that I had in the trunk of my car. Could be a dollar store item that I purchased in about 2006 or so. Anyway, it worked 'ok', more or less, until a breeze/wind. So I folded/retracted it and put it in my pants pocket. Too small/lightweight to use when it's windy. I'm going to check out your suggestions on my list tomorrow. Thank you so much. I hadn't a clue that there would be so many replys! Have a nice evening, and sweet dreams to all.
............Thank you, Mz iMac !

Hi Romary, my umbrellas are SPF material. Silver on the outside (in bright sunlight looks white) and has vents for wind (great for the boardwalk!). The inside is a pretty turquoise color.
I coordinate with white outfits, usually blue tops, lol, and white gold jewelry.
I still wear SPF sunscreen all the way to my toes and when I'm out in the sun for prolonged periods (like in the yard or on the deck) I wear a wide brimmed hat usually.

LuckyCharm: Yes, it's a good idea to look for the SPF variety, because the sunlight does penetrate through many umbrellas, especially the one I used today. Thank you! ![]()

@Sister Golden Hair That reminds me of the time a couple of years ago that I saw an episode of Dr. Oz. There was someone on the show who wore long gloves, made especially for driving in the car. The fingertips were exposed, but the gloves went clear up to the armpits. For me, there is no way I would wear that in hot weather, even though it was made of lightweight material.
HOWEVER, you should have seen her hands and arms. They did a closeup and her skin was like porcelain and Dr. Oz was saying how very soft her hands/arms were. It was truly amazing to look at the closeup of her skin.
But, I just don't see me ever going as far as that! I do try to watch that my hands are lower on the steering wheel when the sun is beating down on the windshield, as opposed to having my hands up at the top, closer to the window.
There is probably some place you can buy those kind of gloves, as I remember her saying something about a trend in manufacturers of very long gloves that are lightweight and SPF.

I do not believe I have ever seen anyone use an umbrella for the sun.

WorldTraveler: What a great idea, wearing long gloves while driving. I drove a lot, years ago, and my hands were much older looking than my age (even now, although they're much better than before). Why didn't I think of at least wearing driving gloves? SPF driving gloves would be ideal.

@ROMARY Someone at work knows people who do this, so I asked her to find out the manufacturer's name or the store where they can be bought. If I find out all the details, I will post here for you. ![]()
