I have an older male cat with these issues. There are 2 natural remedies that have helped him tremendously. I buy it at Only Natural Pet online, but some specialty pet stores sell the brand, or can order it. I don't know what I'd do without these. I buy the Newton Bladder/Kidney, & the Energy/Vitality Assist.
BTW, I see this site has 15% off today, plus free shipping on all orders (I think I'll have to take advantage of this, lol).

I put it directly in my cats mouth- he's tolerates things like that really well. I put the drops I need in a tiny shot glass, then squeeze it up into the dropper. I don't give the cat food 15 minutes before or after the remedy. I give this to my cat 2x per day as maintenance, morning & evening. In the beginning I did it 3-4x per day.
It's a clear liquid with no smell, so it's quick & easy.

You can help your cat by increasing the amount of moisture in his diet. You can start to feed him canned food twice a day and mix in some water or no-salt added chicken stock to it.
Give him dry cat food only as a snack --- because dry cat food absorbs the water in the cat's body causing urinary problems.
You can also add a pet fountain to your home. Cats like to drink from running water and the pet fountain attracts them to the water. Buy a ceramic fountain as the plastic ones can cause allergic reactions in the cats mouth. Make sure you keep the fountain clean.
Switching to a canned cat food diet, adding water or no-salt chicken stock to your cats canned food, decreasing the dry cat food and adding a pet fountain to your home for your cats to drink from will not only benefit your male cat -- but will help your other cat to avoid urinary problems as well. ![]()

Pinkroses, you've been given some solid advice from the above posters.
I'll tell you what I did.
I have a male cat w/ the same diagnosis. He went to the vet again & again; tough on him, costly for me. Vet recommended pricey food which he hated, blah, blah.
In the beginning, I became terrified of dry, so tried feeding my cats wet food only which was a major PITA and they were always hungry. Meal times/separations were tough, especially since I work a lot.
Yes, I want to do what's best for my cats, but I don't have the income to continually feed food that's beyond what I can afford on a daily basis. Let's get real here.
Then I met a cat lady who works at PetSmart who has 10 cats. She told me to do what she does: for supper, feed the male (affordable) Purina Friskies SPECIAL DIET canned food (it comes in bits, shredded or pate) mixed w/ water to make it almost soupy, and to go ahead & free feed a decent grain-free dry food. I've been doing this for well over a year, and everyone is happy. I also bought a water fountain which they both now drink from. (Hooray!) My male is thriving & there've been NO trips to the vet's.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
p.s. Lucky you! I used to have a mobile vet & an amazing mobile groomer. Both businesses are gone now. Bummer.

p.s. I know that everyone has their own way of doing things, but, ...
I have a large Rubbermaid container that I keep the cat's dry food in. I buy 2 bags of the above Nature's Recipe, and one bag of Blue Buffalo Wild (duck), & mix together.
Both cats are very happy with that.... and as I said they're both healthy & thriving.

YES....I forgot to mention the MOST important thing about this problem!!
Like the poster above mentioned, dry food will do nothing but cause problems. With my cat, it's ALL dry food, grain-free included that make the problem worse (I experimented).
Now he ONLY gets canned food....all the time. I use Dr. Pitcairn's book as my animal bible, & he talks about this problem (I couldn't do without this book!)
I also give him "Animal Essentials" Plant Enzymes with Probiotics daily.

On 8/24/2014 Pinkroses said: Thanks for the advice. I ordered a fountain and wet friskies cat food. I can not feed them separately and can not afford special food. I will try this and let you all know how it works!
Ditto!
Hey, about the fountain: Back when I initially got mine, neither one of my cats would go near it, so I started a thread here asking how to get them used to it.
57babe gave me good advice. She said to put the fountain where their usual water bowl was, but don't plug it in. Wait while until they get used to it, and then plug it in.
I really NEVER thought I'd see the day when my male would actually drink from it, but now he does!
p.s. I get the Friskies Special Diet food from PetSmart.
Good luck w/ your kitties, Pinkroses!
