Upgrading electric meter to digital

Has anyone had this done?  Got a card in the mail that my electric company is putting a new "digital" electric meter in.  Is this so they don't have to come out and read my meter or is it so they can charge me more money (ha)?

Re: Upgrading electric meter to digital

Yes and I live in an apt.  No problems at all.  My bills have been reasonable. Over a year ago I changed from Com Ed to some other electric co.  What a big mistake.  My bills were so high that I finally went back to Com Ed and that is where I am staying.  HeartCat Very Happy

@hoosieroriginal  I was forced into it over a year ago.  It is supposed to be more accurate.  I think my electric bills have been more reasonable and steady with this new method of measuring usage.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

They changed all the houses in our neighborhood last week.  It only took a few minutes at each house.  The electricity flashed on/off for a second when they made the switch.  Will have to wait to see if it affects the bill...hope not!

They did ours a little over a year ago.   Took about 20 mins for them to do it.   They don't have to read the meter anymore.   I haven't noticed a difference in the bill at all

Re: Upgrading electric meter to digital

We were given the option about a year ago.

The meter is on an outside wall next to a bedroom.

We didn't feel the electronics of the meter were safe so opted out. ---We saved someone's job in the process.

Re: Upgrading electric meter to digital

They did this to my apartment complex a few years ago, and my bills have stayed relatively the same.

The funny thing is, all of the Chicken Littles conspiracy theorists, were all in a panic because "OMG!!!! The devices emit radiation(they don't) and cancer rates are going to skyrocket!!!"

No one has gotten sick from these.

Re: Upgrading electric meter to digital

Mine went digital several years ago.  The change-over was flawless and my bills remained relatively the same.  Yes, I've seen a small increase, but the summer temperatures have been averaging several degrees higher and my refrig and A/C are putting on some years, so I'm not at all surprised that I'm using more power.
