I'm sooo happy for them getting a raise.  (NOT!!!)  I have been at my job for 42 years.  I have a bachelors degree in my field.  I make less than $39 per hour.  And when I do get a raise it is maybe a dollar and hour if I'm lucky.  I work for a hospital..and no I'm not a nurse.

Posters showed a chart of the actual wages of longshoremen.  The figures were right around your salary, @ruthbe.

Because they were told to panic by propaganda media (which I read and watch to understand how these things get started). Propaganda media was foaming at the mouth, hoping the strike would hit the economy hard. They are disappointed that the strike has been called off. If things go awry, they believe it's to their advantage- more grievance, more unrest, more hate equal better ratings, more advertisers and more money.

Re: Update on Dock Workers Strike

The two things that bothered me was that they didnt seem to have any thought to the victims of Helene, and the union leader said they want to get more money from the billionaire corporations that make their money off the blood and sweat of the port workers. IMHO when theres a national emergency like hurricanes or earthquakes those people have to be the countrys number one priority. You can do your striking and picketing at a later time. As far as the corps making money off of blood and sweat of the workers, its not like they work for free like slaves. Their starting salary is $80,000/yr and with overtime the average income is $200,000/yr. Its a hard job but you know that when you apply for the job.

Completely agree. Thank goodness cooler heads prevailed and the strike didn't last. I believe they realized how toxic the strike would be to those people suffering the effects of Helene and decided exactly what you said- the people caught up in a national emergency need to be the number one priority.

Well, if there's one thing I think most of us learned and can agree upon since COVID, it's that a lot of jobs we take for granted are crucial to our way of life. Or maybe we can't even agree on that? Seems like everything is so partisan and political. We need to work together.

I don't think the salary increases for the long shoremen seemed out of line, but then I think workers in general deserve more than most of the wealthy corporations who employ them are willing to pay.

Just my opinions. Have a Great Day!

(My guess is this thread will be poofed soon.)

ETA: I do agree the strike was a "bad look" so close to the devastation of Helene.

I heard that with benefits, the average is over $300,000. The Union Boss makes $700,000 and with benefits $900,000. I heard he is worth over 9 million dollars.

I posted the data and the 200,000 pay is workers putting in up to 100 hours a week. Top hourly pay was 39/hr and starting pay 20/hr.

Two posters here who know so very little are once again playing their game. Best to ignore them. They are alway unkind and spew irrational thoughts. It is not going to change, so best to just laugh.

Re: Update on Dock Workers Strike

I wouldn't want their job, nor would I want someone for whom I care to do their job. It's hard physical labor.

Easy to sit behind a desk and complain that they're wanting paid too much. I believe they deserve what they're demanding.

Just as some feel they chose their job so they shouldn't complain, those in NC chose to live there, and some chose not to evacuate.
