My poor cat! He's been a hard luck case all his life.

DH took him to the vet today because he's suddenly gained a lot of weight and doesn't move much. He can't climb up to his kitty condo anymore, or jump up onto beds, or onto our sofa (which he loves, since we have a warming blanket laid across it and turned up all the time). So we have to carry him around and put him where he wants to go.

The vet examined him and took blood samples, and we'll get the results by Wednesday. I've been wondering if his thyroid has pooped out but she said that almost never happens in cats. It's more likely diabetes or arthritis.

From what she said and from what I've found out about these symptoms, I'm guessing it's arthritis. He doesn't eat excessively, he doesn't uri nate excessively, etc. I wonder if it's arthritis that hurts him so much he doesn't want to move and so he's gained a lot of weight--two pounds in just 2 or 3 months and he's up to 18 lbs. Poor little guy looks like a beached whale when he lies down, which is a lot.

I presume that, if it is arthritis, they'll give him something to control the pain and help him start moving again because that's the only way he'll lose weight. She also checked him to see if he's had a recurrence of cancer (he had a malignant tumor removed from his shoulder in December) and found no evidence. So we'll just have to wait for the blood test results and figure out how to go from there.
