Unreasonable Expectations for Doctors

After listening to a loud conversation between two people in the waiting room of my local hospital, I learned that Doctors should not make mistakes. After a few minutes, others joined in and all seemed to be in agreement regarding "no mistakes" are allowed, if you are a doctor.

I'll be the first one to admit, that I always hope my doctor is correct regarding about his/hers diagnosis and treatment, especially if it's me we are talking about. Those folks seemed to hang all of their hopes and put all of their faith in their doctors. That to me, is the mistake.

No doctor is perfect, whether one believes they shouldn't make a mistake or not. They are human beings.

I've come to this conclusion; the expectation for a doctor to never be wrong or never make a mistake, (as they put it) is too much. It isn't realistic at all, it's a lot pressure on a person to never be wrong, and obsurd to even ask another person to never make a mistake at anything.

I'm curious now, how do you folks feel about it? Should we expect them to never be wrong, or just hope they are never wrong? Is hope an unreasonable expectation as well?

At the end of the day, it's our lives we put into the hands of another person. So, what is a reasonable expectation for a doctor?

For me personally, I want the very best they can give me, but perfection? I don't think that's possible.
