I don't care for fake flowers, fake pockets, or fake fruit and the opossum and raccoon enjoy the bananas.

I have always fed birds, ferals, opossums, raccoon, years and years. Never have they caused me any problems, invaded my home, brought mice, rats...I like them, it pleases me to see them excited to find cookies and bananas.

How do your neighbors feel about you feeding the local wildlife, @occasionalrain?  If there were bears in your area, would you leave out food for them?

I think it's so irresponsible to feed wildlife. It encourages this behavior and may lead animals to attack humans lookinq For food.

This happened in my neighborhood with people feeding coyotes. Someone was bitten and had to get rabies shots. The coyote was found and was put down.

re are bears in the area but I haven't seen any. It's the wild turkeys that are unpredictable and sometimes fly into car windshelds and the deer that can be a hazard to driving that are a concern.

The neighbors haven't complained as far as I know.

@on the bay  Wow an informed response. Possum do humans a great favor cleaning up our garbage and ridding vermin.  I love seeing the raccoons and possums , skunks too in my yard.  I don't let my dogs in the backyard at night without a leash.

Thanks for your post.

@occasionalrain   This just might be one of my favorite posts ever!   I'm exactly the same on all points.

@deeva,

As much as I love wildlife, I can't imagine feeding a coyote.

In my daughter's neighborhood we have an email alert when a coyote is spotted so everyone can make sure their pets are not left outside.

I dislike the taste and scent of bananas but I buy them because I like how they look in my fruit bowl. I suspect some might find that peculiar, so I wonder if other posters do things that some might find odd.

The banana thing is totally something I might do.  However, the hubs likes them (even though I don't) and I can morph them into banana bread (which I do like if it's not too banana-y).

I tend to buy gigantic bags of lemons for a fruit display, but generally only use about a third of the harvest I display.  Same concept I suppose.
