WHO issues the stiff fine when the person LIES about not having insurance?  The cops have left the scene and the persons with the damaged car and hospital bills is left to fight it out.

I have Progressive but I am not sure its worth the cheap rates for what has happened in the last 2 years.

I am in Maryland too (Towson).

@Cookie2025......the stiff fines come from the MVA. if you dont pay them, they wont issue you a title or a tag until the fines are paid and you provide proof of insurance. these fines do NOT go away.

the rest of it will be handled by your insurance. if you are not happy with how they are handling it then a lawyer is a must.

Hi @wakefield64

 It's MANDATORY INSURANCE..

In Ohio, it is illegal to drive any motor vehicle without insurance, and it is illegal for a vehicle owner to allow anyone else to drive his or her motor vehicle without insurance.

  • Proof of insurance must be presented at traffic stops, accident scenes and vehicle inspections.

  • Minimum insurance requirements are $25,000 for injury/death of one person, $50,000 for injury/death of two or more people, and $25,000 for property damage in an accident.

I thought I would update since I saw this on the first page.

She was a citizen.  For driving with no license, she received at 25 dollar fine, 256 dollar court cost and 12000 from progressive.  The police repost says she was the sole occupant of the car.  She told Progressive her 2 kids were in the car.  2000 grand for her and each kid and 6 grand for the car she was driving.

I will no longer be a progressive customer when our policy is up.

To say I am livid is an understatement.

My brother was rear ended by an out of state uninsured driver awhile back. He was third in line at a stoplight and his truck and all 2 cars in front were totaled. Since the guy had no insurance they cited by brother for the accident. His insurance paid out over 90 grand and jacked his rates up. This was State Farm. He had a boatload of policies with them and cancelled them all and took his business somewhere else where they said he was not responsible for it.  They always get you coming or going.

I do think it is fascinating that people here illegally now apparently have no problem obtaining a driver's license, but somehow actual citizens cannot be expected to obtain any sort of ID to vote - because it's just too hard to do.

And since almost every state only requires checking a block to indicate citizenship when registering to vote, do we really believe those here illegally won't also register?  I mean it's not as if breaking the law is something they would never do - especially when it's to their advantage and they can easily see the benefits of doing so.

@Isobel Archer

I live in New Jersey. It takes 6 points and different forms of ID to, get or renew a driver's license.

I checked voter registration in NJ. You have to give your NJ license  or state issued ID number. You can not simply check a box. Each state has its own requirements to vote.

Your driver's license is NOT proof of citizenship - it is only proof of residence.  Courts have been ruling that proof of citizenship is discriminatory and that people should simply be allowed to self certify that they are citizens.  It is apparently too onerous to provide a birth certificate.

Here in VA, we had a situation a couple of years ago with non citizens "checking the block" to register to vote in Federal elections.  Our former governor's response was to try to get the "block" on the form eliminated so that no one who did that in the future could be prosecuted.

Didn't really matter as none of these folks were prosecuted anyway - despite having voted illegally - which is a felony.  But whatever I guess.

In the Commonwealth of VA you don't have to have insurance on your car - instead you pay an "Uninsured Motorist Fee" of $500. And if you are involved in an accident and found not to have insurance there are stiff penalties.

I was coming to post that. To add to it, this is what the fund is for:

Fee’s from penalties (fines) and those paying the UM fee of $500 comprise the Uninsured Motorists Fund. The SCC (State Corporation Commission) distributes money from the fund to the insurance companies writing motor vehicle bodily injury and property damage liability insurance on motor vehicles registered in Virginia. Funds distributed by the SCC are used to help offset the cost of the uninsured motorist coverage required for all liability insurance policies written in Virginia.

@Annabellethecat66  thing I've never understood - also in VA and it's been awhile since I registered my car bc I think this one I initially registered for 3 years but know I have another year left.  However, I thought when I last registered I had to verify that I had insurance (I think the words were that I was required to at least carry liability).

Regarding Live PD and all the judge shows on TV these days it seems that everyone "was on their way to register their car or didn't know their insurance had lapsed".  If my insurance is about to expire I get an email AND all the paperwork via snail mail to mail the check in if I choose not to pay online.   Sadly ppl with no insurance usually don't have any assets to go after (house or car).

Re: Unlicensed drivers

[ Edited ]

You only have to carry liability insurance. You must have a license. There is a place in our town where you can get both of them printed to look authentic but they are bogus. You can also get your odometer turned back, the VIN number on a car altered, and a brand new license plate from the state of your choice, the place has been operating for years. The only police shut it down repeatedly but it opens up again in another location just days later. One of my former students’ uncle owns it. He lives in Mexico and the money goes to him; his employees take the risk working there and get a small cut of the money. My student worked there in the summers. One reason our insurance premiums go up.
