United Health Care, one of the countries largest insurers, is considering dropping out of the medical exchanges that are the bedrock of the Obamacare program.  The company announced that they are facing massive losses in the program and have downgraded their earnings estimate for the current quarter.  There are 550,000 enrollee that selected United Health Care as their insurance carrier through the state programs to enroll non insured individuals.

Our country's health insurance model is based on private companies making a profit.

As such, companies who did a poor job of underwriting and marketing will naturally drop out...and others will enter and fill the void.

That's the problem with healthcare, IMO. Why should a nation's health depend on companies making what they consider to be a suitable profit? That's why close to one fifth of our GDP is soent on healthcare - twice that of other countries.

They may have downgraded their earnings estimate - but rest assured, when the report comes out, they made lots of PROFIT...just not a level acceptable to their shareholders.

Why do we spend do much?  Two reasons are innovation (drugs to equipment) and the ease of getting virtually everything.  Drugs that are routine here can be rare in countries with single payer.  I follow the healthcare scandals from around the world, and it's scary outside of this country.  People crowd funding their care in England to cancer patients being put at the back of the line in Canada...yes, their people go bankrupt paying for their care, too.

“We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection.

I have no idea how this will affect us here in Florida if at all. We have a Medicare Advantage plan with United Health Care. DH had heart surgery last year and our cost out of pocket was only $3,600 for everything. I guess we'll find out next year if it changes ours.

I don't think it will affect Medicare plans

I recall that it was going to be a job killer and millions would be laid off.

Instead unemployment is going down - it's half of what it was 6 years ago.

Small businesses were going to close because they couldn't afford ACA.

In reality, in 2016 businesses with less than 50 employees are exempt...it was 100 employees or less this year.

Any other "negative predictions" for me?

Mine were too with no reason given. Neither were argumentative.

Re: United Health Care considers dropping out of Obamacare

We had UHC for about 30yrs thru DH job. Even in retirement we had extremely excellent coverage until 2014 when we were switched to BCBS. Crappy benefits now, but better than nothing.  In all the years we have not had a premium, just deductibles. Maximum out of pocket is 3600.  In 2003 I read an article on UHC CEO getting 3  billion a year, MAYBE, this why Medical Costs are so high?  What do all the CRO's make in a year, base salary and then perks.  How about when you went to your DR, they could do a blood and urine test in their office? An xray?  If anything looked off then they sent you to a specialist. DRs doctored back then, now you go and tell them you have a pain,or it hurts when you tinkle, you broke your finger and they just send you off elsewhere aftering charging better than a $100.00 for a visit.        There needs to be a return to doctoring, otherwise just set some kind of robotic machinery so we can do our own testing.   Broke your leg go to the machine in aisle 5, etc, etc.     Sorry for the ramble.---------tedEbear

Re: United Health Care considers dropping out of Obamacare

According to Fortune magazine, " If you use the broadest definition of unemployment, the ratio of people over the age of 16 with jobs to the overall 16-and-over population, the Labor Department says that 40.6% of the population is unemployed."

Many unemployed have stopped looking for a job, so they are not counted in the official unemployment reports. Which is why the report is not accurate. Many have had to take lower paying jobs and part time jobs that don't pay health benefits. And those like me, who lost their wonderful health care had to find new plans with sky-high monthly costs. I would have been better off without the passing of O's healthcare plan which was forced on us.
