I think I'm lucky to have a car and don't have to find a ride or use uber.   I don't it is glorified I think it is expensive and people can't always afford a car today.

I wonder about what if people use uber and then there is no uber available to take them back home.

Re: Uber Sexual Assaults

[ Edited ]

Same here, Patbz.  The only time I've used Uber I was in the company of my sons when we were out of town.

I'd never feel comfortable alone in one.  I'm elderly and my glory days are behind me, but as I always say, "Rape isn't about lust, it's about anger."   And, too, it may be that you are injured or killed for money.  Nope!

One time when I was in Las Vegas, I ended up having to see Celine Dion's show alone.  The cabbie (I was alone in the taxi) who was taking me back to my hotel after the show decided to go off the Strip to "avoid the bumper-to-bumper cars."

My heart was in my mouth until he returned to lights and action.  Those familiar with Vegas know that once you are off the Strip, the area next to it is seedy and scary.

Gave the driver a $15 tip only because I was relieved that he did not kill me.

Sorry to say, but people have been assaulted in taxis too--and that has been happening for a very long time, even back earlier than the 1950s. Taxis eventually became regulated so there was some mechanism to monitor and license the drivers.

Uber takes a completely hands off approach and says they have no responsibility to make sure their drivers are safe to ride with. And that type of corner cutting is how they make their money. Lyft is reputed to be a bit better in that regard.

When my husband had his cataract surgery there was a women who showed up for her surgery and got out of a cab. The guy who drove the cab came in for her after her surgery, wheeled her out and drove her home in the cab. It wasn't Uber or Lyft it was a local cab company, now to me that's service. I know that's not the discussion, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

One of my friends swears by Uber. Sh lives in SOHO and taxis are easy to catch, but she prefers Uber.

I prefer taxis. I’m on a busy street off the FDR Drive - easy to get a taxi here. My destinations are in busy areas - no problem getting home.

For out-of-City trips, I use a car service.

@lovescats, I can't imagine that neither Uber or Lyft (my preference) would ever NOT be available where I live, but I guess in more sparsely populated areas it could be a problem.

Well, I don't mean to belittle sexual assualts, by any means, but how many assaults versus how many trips?  There must have been millions of trips over 2 years.  Percentages would be more meaningful information.

@Peaches McPhee Uber did report on that statistic, but I don't remember exactly what the percentage was, but it was quite a small percentage.  Also, the number given by OP does not break out how many were driver on passenger vs passenger on driver.  It goes both ways.  So, there might be a good reason for that female Uber driver to carry a gun, although she really shouldn't be talking about it.  There's something to be said for the element of surprise.  Pepper spray might be a better and easier to grab choice.

“Passengers may be more vulnerable to certain types of assault. For example, Bomberger said he has heard from multiple riders who fell asleep in an Uber or Lyft and woke up to find a driver attacking them. And 92 percent of people who experienced sexual assault involving penetration were passengers, according to reports to Uber.”

@Mindy D, I would have guessed that it would go that way. But still, it would be good to know the ratio of assaults to the number of overall trips.

Noel used to say she would never take a Uber because she didn't feel safe using them. She took cabs all the time. I don't know if she didn't drive ,or did it because of her health problems. She was very  broad minded about things like this, so I figured she must have good reason for feeling so strongly about it

I recently learned that many medical facilities won't let a person who's been anesthesized during their procedure leave in any of those.  (Dental, colonoscopy, spinal epidurals, etc)  You MUST have a person you know drive you home.  Good idea, IMO.
