I had this happen once. The post office had proof of when they delivered it and as the sender did not request a signature, there was nothing that could be done.

How maddening! Our mailbox is all the way down our driveway and across the road in a rural area, also, and I always wondered how it's handled if someone comes along and takes a package out.

Do they also leave the packages out on the road, or do they bring packages up to your house? I can see how the mail would go in the mailbox, but it would seem like they would bring parcels in.
You can contact USPS and give them the tracking number. Also, the sender. If it's insured at least you can get reimbursed. If the sender is a large retailer they'll probably re-send and then they can collect the claim and everybody gets made whole.

This happened to me recently. I called the post office, and the package was delivered the next day. The man that I spoke with at the post office said that he would talk with my carrier. I assume it was still on the truck. Very frustrating.

This happened to me. It was an hour and a half between the time it was delivered and the time BF came home. I contacted the seller (L.L. Bean), who replaced the package at no charge. I filed a police report and now UPS will only deliver when someone is here. If they come while I'm at work, I have to sign the slip and wait for them to redeliver. They will only do this for MY packages, because I'm the one who filed the police report.

My experience was it did not matter that the package was insured. The mail carrier had recorded from his truck the time the package was delivered. Because the sender did no ask for a signature there was nothing that could be done. It was a private sender so they did not resend the item.
A large retailer might resend the item and do their own trace.
Normally the USPS is only responsible to deliver the package to the address unless they are instructed to deliver to a person.

If the item is insured, the recipient (who didn't actually receive it) can sign a document that they did not receive it and the sender can file a claim for the value insured.
At least with this being an electronic item, ATT probably has the tracking number so if somebody stole it and goes to use it, it will be tracked to them. I hope nobody stole it. Maybe it will end up that it was delivered to the wrong house or something. If you know your neighbors you can check around, or even if not.
I recently had a UPS parcel that went to a neighbor's house two doors down. It was a new driver who was not familiar and instead of looking at the house numbers on the houses (argh!), he saw that the house next to mine had an address 10 numbers off and decided mine was on the opposite side of him. I don't know how he managed not to see the address that was on the front of their house, right above where he laid the package on their porch but - whatever. After talking to UPS a couple times we figured it out and I went and got it.

Fed Ex once left my package at a rental house next door where several students lived. None of them thought to ask about it. It took an investigation to get my package back. However, now the trend du jour is for unprincipled idiots to follow UPS trucks, wait till the coast is clear, and go to someone's porch and steal the package. There are all kinds of variables in the mix as to whether you get your package or not.
