If my dad could see the UPS planes,trains,trucks and everything else they have now,World Wide shipping/delivery , he would be so impressed. When he started they used cars.............lol
I was told to get a full time job at UPS, you were really set for life working. UPS has a lot part time workers. They don't get benefits like the full time positions. Anyway I heard it was little tough getting the full time jobs.
There are a lot of part time positions at UPS, but I don't understand why people knock such things.
My husband is a full time mechanic for UPS and he works with a lot of part time workers that love that option. Many are farmers looking for health insurance, and work in the middle of the night loading trucks, so they can farm during the day. They also have several people who own their own businesses, but want a steady part time job with insurance and retirement.
The part time employees now have to wait one year for their benefits to kick in (it used to be a much shorter wait) but they still get paid vacations, excellent health insurance, and retirement benefits.
There are temp employees each year for 'peak' season, and those don't get benefits, I believe.
And still lots of full time employees. A very demanding company to work for, but they pay very well, and benefits are great.

@Mominohio I worked with a guy who's father was a senior UPS executive. He retired in the 80's when UPS has already started the trend to cut benefits by introducing part time employment. They were one of the first to pioneer cutting worker's benefits by reducing their hours down to part time positions. He said his dad couldn't take it anymore and retired as that was not the company he knew for decades.
I totally get companies need to seek savings where they can but (for me) placing that burden on their workers is just not right especially in view of how incredibly high CEO's salaries are in relation to their workforce pay.

In my husband's 15 years with the company, I've never heard of anyone's hours being cut (I only know of his location, though). Like other companies, there are full time positions, and part time positions (and temporary positions). And most anyone who starts part time can move to full time if they wish, as positions become available. I was under the impression that the part time positions had always been so (they include the people who wash and park the trucks at night, and those that sort the loads and load the trucks). Most of those part time jobs work between 5-6 hours per night at his location. And again they do get benefits, although their retirement doesn't accrue the same as a full time employee (think it has to do with hours worked+years of service). What I don't know is if at one time those positions were full time, and fewer people, working longer days. Perhaps that is where cuts were made?
I actually am impressed that part time people can get such good benefits. You simply don't see that in our area in either manufacturing or retail and food service (which is pretty much what we have to choose from if you aren't professional).
I have noticed that the unions have not done well in protecting positions for the workers, though. When he started, my husband's location had three full time mechanics. Now there are just one and a half (the 'half' guy is full time but divides his work week between two different locations). One of the reasons I'm not a fan of unions. They tend to do what is in the best interest of themselves, not always protecting union jobs.
