UPS and FEDEX-How do they plan deliveries?

I have 2 packages scheduled for delivery today. One via Fed Ex and the other from UPS. I checked tracking on both this AM and both were updated early this AM to say they are on the delivery truck. It is now 10 AM and while sitting on my back porch I saw both a UPS and a FedEx truck go past my house and down the street deeper into my subdivision which has 160 homes. Thinking they might have put my packages onthe front porch I checked both times and nothing. I thought both of these companies had sophisticated delivery systems that allowed them to group deliveries together that we're going to the same areas so as to not waste gas. Evidently not however!
