@World Traveler wrote:@tends2dogs I have had it done both ways. So it is always confusing to me. One of the gals I work with has a husband who works for UPS. He said that UPS and the post office have some kind of agreement/contract. UPS might take it right to your local post office and then the local PO takes it from there.
However, I have frequently had packages that started out as the regular mail and then when I check the tracking, there's a statement from UPS says something like "we will be in your area and can deliver it faster," and so my UPS guy drops it off. To me it is not faster when UPS delivers it with that message, because my mail comes around 1:30 in the afternoon, and I am quite positive I am the last person on the route for UPS, as it usually doesn't show up until around 6pm. ha! Unless UPS means that the post office would have delivered it a day later.
And the few times I have had a return, I have on occasion seen where there is a USPS barcode and a UPS barcode on the package. Go figure!
Update: Just checked one of my latest orders. It started out as "UPS delivery by U.S. mail" and then a few days later, when it was close by it said: WE'LL BE IN YOUR AREA AND WILL DELIVER YOUR UPS SUREPOST PACKAGE INSTEAD OF THE POST OFFICE. So it started out UPS and was supposed to be switched to the local post office, but then UPS made a decision to continue carrying it until delivering it to my home.
Very good description of what does happen. I have the same things occur.
My husband works for UPS and it is my understanding that the USPS does have contracts for delivering for UPS in mostly rural areas that the post office will be hitting daily, but would require more time/fuel/manpower to be delivered by UPS.
And they will switch it over to that "will be in your area" status frequently when they are coming out my way and have other packages to deliver nearby.
It is also my understanding that the shipper has to agree to the switch from UPS who starts the shipping process then hands off to local post office. I think they get a better price for agreeing to allow that to happen.

I don't mind surepost with QVC or smartpost with HSN. They both provide tracking numbers that specify date and time of the package turnovers to the USPS. I usually wait just one extra day for delivery.

@Perkup wrote:I officially stopped buying anything from QVC that I think might be delivered by the USPO. Because of the way things are routed here, it takes at least two extra days to come via the Postal Service. Further, when they deliver anything in a bag (as opposed to a box), it gets stuffed into the mailbox and looks like it was wallowed on by pigs by the time I get it. So nothing more from QVC unless it is over-boxed and delivered by UPS.
You have to change your shipping speed then. Most retailers are doing this, but some give you an option to pay more for a different speed of shipping. Amazon most definitely does this.
I appreciate your suggestion. However I don't see any sensible reason to pay more for an item just because QVC chooses to use what is a very poor service to deliver. I asked over 20 years ago that everything sent to me come via UPS. This works beautifully. But our postal serice routes everything to one small town first, then it goes to New Orleans, and then out. This applies even if I am sending something next door. It goes to another town first, then to New Orleans and then back here. Takes three days, and it is ridiculous. It constitutes a problem for everyone. So, no. I am not going to order anything small again. If it's not too large for the mailbox, I will find it locally or through Amazon or eBay. Amazon gets most things delivered in two days regardless. QVC's loss - not mine.

You don't have to do a thing you don't want to. Fact is most everybody is using these methods to ship. The USPS has entered into agreements with Fedex AND UPS for these services. This is to benefit our USPS. They need to make money and that is the reason for these new innovative shipping tiers. USPS in some instances will deliver on Sunday as well.
For standard delivery this is pretty much what you get. QVC didn't just decide one day to invent this method of shipping. The carriers did. QVC and other companies can only use what is available to them.
Yes, Amazon does get more things delivered in two days. THEY TOO use the UPS Surepost. Guess how I know that? Amazon didn't create these shipping and handling arrangements. The carriers did (Fedex, UPS and USPS).
My point to tell you that you may need to change your ship method is accurate if you only want UPS to deliver your package. Yes it will cost you more. Otherwise, you are stuck with the new shipping policies these companies have created. It really is that simple.

I just received boots from Kohl's and they came Surepost....so I think other companies are using it too...

UPS Surepost means it will be delivered by USPS. But there are many times my UPS says, day or two of delivery, that they will be in area and they end up delivering my package.
