My oldest son is an Intelligence Specialist in the Navy. He's stationed on land currently, but when he's deployed for several months at a time, I constantly worry about him.

Very sad and close to home, Mate 2nd Class Noe Hernandez is from here and was only 26 years old. Condolences to all their families and loved ones.

The head of the Navy's 7th Fleet has relieved the skipper of the USS Fitzgerald and two other officers for losing "situational awareness" in the hours leading up to a fatal June collision that left seven sailors dead, the service's deputy chief said Thursday. The Fitzgerald struck a freighter off the coast of Japan.

Adm. Bill Moran, the deputy chief of naval operations, said that Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin plans to relieve Cmdr. Bryce Benson for cause. On Thursday, the Navy released a preliminary report on the June 17 collision between the Fitzgerald and the freighter ACX Crystal off the coast of Japan.

The ship's entire leadership, Moran said, will be relieved, and about a dozen sailors face some punishment, including all of the destroyer's watch. Further sanctions are possible, Moran said.

Aucoin acted swiftly because the investigation indicated serious mistakes were made by the crew, Moran said. The Navy has lost confidence in those sailors.

Collisions should never happen, Moran said. "We got it wrong."

My husband is retired Navy sailor (surface). He said the ultimate responsibility for the ship is the CO,XO,on down and when something like this happens. The people in charge wether they were at the helm or not, will be held accountable.

The accident from what both my husband and myself have read was the navy ship was at fault.

As my dh says, with all the people on watch 24/7 how someone could miss something as critical as the huge ship there was a major failure somewhere along the line.

Pretty close to my thoughts in my post a couple months ago. Things like that with the top technologically advanced ships in the U.S. Navy? They just don't happen unless of some type of error, usually seems to be the human part of the equations.

When the lives of young men serving our country are lost, someone or many someone's should be held responsible. To me lives lost should mean more than a demotion or reprimand. This incident very easily could have been very more serious, and not just to the men serving on this ship.

This ship has Tomahawk Missles on it for a reason, and that usually means protection of ours, or our Allie's country. Lots of "what if's" when this kind of thing happens.
