Re: U.S. Braces for French Fry and Potato Shortage

@novamc1  I understand that. One year we lost the entire apple crop, because of 14 days in March that were way too warm..it turned cold and all of the blossoms were hit by frost and died

Re: U.S. Braces for French Fry and Potato Shortage

Although I will not be affected by the looming potato shortage, I feel bad for the farmers, employees, and their families, because of the financial toll it will take on them. This time of year makes it that much more devastating.

We've  survived many crisises in this country.  I feel confident we'll make it through this one too.

There was a similar story on NBC Nightly News last night concerning the Florida orange crop.  Look for higher orange juice prices, they reported.

Over the years the demand for uniform potatoes have caused a decrease in variety and thus difference in hardiness.

My trucker daughter buys our winter supply of potatoes from the same warehouses she loads from.   She recently paid more for the drivers boxes of both potatoes, and onions.

Maine's harvest would've been done long since (usually September).

@Venezia Yep. I remember the Potato Report interrupting the regular TV broadcasting. Schools let out for the harvest; we often wondered why send them to school when a week later, they would be out for almost the month. Same with blueberries.

At least Mainers will have done well this season.
