Tsunami question?

We lived in the Yokahama area in the 70's when my husband was in the Army and had been through many earthquakes but not anything compared to 8.9...does anyone know or have heard in the news how long after the quake did the tsunami occur? I know it travels about 500 miles an hour but I am curious how much warning people had?
