This is why cops, especially State Police scare me.

There are many elements: wind, fire, water
But none quite like the element of surprise

Yeah, right. And even with that video, they are still "investigating." Investigating what? He beat the ch*it out of her!! And frankly, I do not care what the "extenuating circumstances" were. She mouthed off at him? Put cuffs on her and take her to jail.

If she was barefoot and walking close to the freeway then I understand his needing to use force if necessary to get her out of harm's way. But once he had her restrained by straddling her why start pummeling her?! Looks like he lost it and he should lose his job. His judgement is seriously flawed.

She was a big woman and for him to keep her from rolling them both onto the highway was to do whatever he needed to. From the video it couldn't be seen what she was doing with the rest of her body. They were on the berm. She was mentally unstable and often when in that state they have super strength and are way stronger. He had to do what needed to be done and if he would have reached for cuffs or spray she could have cost them both of their lives in that time. Don't judge unless you were actually there and witnessed EVERYTHING!! If he would of just kept trying to talk to her and she would have been hit by a truck - well he would have been criticized for letting her get hit. It's no win for the police.

And as for the other story -

A couple of years ago, someone called the police because a young man was acting strangely in a movie theater lobby. Making odd noises, etc.

The police came, told him to get down or something like that, he continued making odd noises so they shot and killed him. He was something like 18 and developmentally challenged. His family was devastated.

There has to be a better way.

If the police would have kid gloved him and he would have ran into the theater and started shooting and stabbing - more criticism for the police allowing it to happen.

It's obvious none of those thinking it's horrible have had any loved ones who were police.

Also, I wonder how much these supposed dogooders got for "releasing" their videos?

Wrong. I have a nephew who is a Philadelphia Police Officer and my Uncle was Military Police. Brutality is brutality, my Uncle used to be beside himself when he would see an officer use excessive force, and he made sure he got that officer retrained at a minimum.

Not defending him . . . but she could have . . . BEFORE the filming began . . . either spit on him, bit him, or even kicked him in the family jewels and set him off. Seems rather unprovoked from video shown on the news. Who knows? I don't. 3 sides to the story. His. Hers. And the TRUTH.

Well, she's a greatgrandmother according to the news. Sounds as if she is mentally disturbed in some way. Police are trained to recognize signs of that (such as strolling barefoot on the freeway) and to deal with it without "losing it" or letting it "set them off". Same as mental health workers. And there is no method of restraining a mentally disturbed person that includes pummeling them in the head.

He would have, hey? Not easy to do when he didn't have a gun or a knife {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

There are studies showing that mentally ill people are at high risk for crimes and being killed.

We can't give carte blanche to law enforcement to kill or beat people within an inch of their lives just because they're acting strange.

THIS woman's crime was walking barefoot near a freeway. She didn't deserve that kind of treatment.

The guy who saw it all and recorded it was interviewed on the news last night. He was still very upset about what he saw. He said she didn't resist, what she did was but up her hands to protect her face when he started hitting her. That's a primal response. Did she deserve a possibly life-threatening head beating because of that?

As a nurse that worked in the hospital for many years I have had multiple situations with patients that were experiencing acute mental health situations, reactions to medications, or having hallucinations & agitation due to other issues. I have been bitten, scratched, spit on, and had an IV pole swung at me. These are not necessarily uncommon situations for individuals that work in health care over time to experience.

And I can assure you that I never once, retaliated with any physical aggression against any of those patients. Nor did I ever see any of my peers respond with aggression or physical retaliation. That would never have been tolerated or accepted at all. In fact, a good colleague of mine spent the night in the ER with a concussion when we had a patient that became wild and ended up hitting this nurse in the head and knocking her out cold.

I agree with BlueCollarBabe....individuals in mental health sectors, as well as many other areas of health care are trained as to how to handle these situations. Police officers should receive this type of training as well and I believe many police departments do offer that training. Punching anyone over and over and over in the head should never be acceptable.

I have tremendous respect for our police officers. They have a very difficult job to do and are placed in harms way many times. But, there can be a few bad apples in the bunch or situations that do occur where police officers are excessive with force. No doubt about it.
