I would think the employee was either mistaken or joking!

Absolutely not possible (and remain a viable business.)
Possibly certain product categories may be restricted that are problematic.

So I guess when shelves are empty they will be locking the doors?

Hmmm. I can see this being possible if they resort to being mainly a food store vs being a "bunch of junk" store.
Dollar Trees tend to set up in areas that are considered a grocery store wasteland. For many, it is the only place they can purchase canned food, frozen food, packaged food. Some carry fresh items. If this is the direction they're going, it could work. Who knows.

Or lying. Low level store employees don't know anything. They don't even know what aisle the cat toys are in.

It is most likely merchandise will originate from India and Vietnam. There is an ongoing, major shift from manufacturing in China to either/both India and Vietnam. Same merchandise, different country of origin.
ETA: The shift also applies across the board from appliances to computers to Dollar Tree stuff.

@Carolina925 I remember that too and their items were scoffed at because of course the war etc. Nos most stuff made in Japan is unaffordable abd might I add is not even close to being junk.
