The only food that goes into the trash is the kind that doesn't start to smell and some goes down the disposal.  Meat bones, chicken etc goes into a bag in the freezer and then disposed of on trash day.

Garbage and recycle bins go on side of garage, not inside.  Trash picked up weekly.

We freeze our food scraps.   We don't like to use the disposal if at all possible-for water conservation especially.

It is just DH and I so we really do not generate a lot of food waste but DS and family freeze theirs, too.

Our bin is also in the garage with the recycle bin.  The organic bin is outside but we don't put food scraps in it-only leaves, etc.

The best I can recommend is to use scented trash bags and those stick on trash bin freshners.

Suggestions needed please if you have any that might work.

Keep large trash can in the garage, then put it out to the curb
weekly.

It reeks even with the lid closed. I dont put food trash in my
kitchen trash bag without tying it up or closing into a ziploc bag.

I have tried baking soda sprinkled on, sprayed air freshener,
none of that works at all.

Of course it is worse in this heat lately and its yucko!!

Has anything worked for you!??

Many suggestions in this thread only mask odor but do not address removing the source of the odor. The reason it smells can be from residue in the can or from bacterial contamination. Take the can outside. Use your hose with the sprayer to hose inside and out. Even fill the can up and dump water. Fill again, add three cups of liquid Chlorox bleach. Allow to sit for twenty minutes, then dump water out. Use an empty spray bottle or a huge glop of paper towels that are wet with a solution of a cup of bleach to about a gallon of water to wipe off the outside of the can every where. Let sit about a half hour or more. You can hose off if you want to. Allow the can the completely dry with lid open in the sun. Then turn can so any outside parts can also become completely dry. This procedure will kill all odor causing bacteria and rinse off any residue from old food or anything else. When you put garbage into the clean can in the future, use plastic kitchen bags and tie them tightly before putting inside trash can. I can pretty much promise you excellent results. Good luck.

@CherryHugs

Even though our trash receptacles are in the side yard near the gate, I don't throw anything in the trash that can spoil and stink.  It's especially important in the AZ heat.

What I have done for years, is to get a freezer bag going.  I use grocery store bags, or reuse zip lock bags.  I put things in it that can spoil and stink and stick it in the freezer.  I add to it as necessary and trash day it goes out.

I don't have a smelly trash can.

That's exactly what I do.  Freeze until trash day.

Hang one of those 'Little Trees' automobile fresheners.  Tape it on the inside of the trash can lid.  They are available in a multitude of scents.

Or:  Spray the interior of the bin or the inside of the trash bag with pure peppermint extract or peppermint oil.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
