I never kept my trash container in the garage when I had a house.  It was on the side of the garage.  I also used to stick things that would smell in the freezer and add to the bin on trash day.

Hi @CherryHugs     yes, have the same problem in the summer I have a dog poop trash out in the back yard... and put really smelly stuff in that container... helps to keep the inside garage container much fresher.

That is really all you can do unless you refrigerate your garbage: 🙂

There are companies that will come out and clean your trash cans. Also a pressure washer or strong hose and Dawn works.

@CherryHugs I keep my garbage and recycling cans inside my garage until pick-up day also. What I have found that works is a few generous sprays inside of your kitchen garbage bags, especially after smelly foods are placed inside, with Febreeze FABRIC refresher extra strength odor eliminator-not the air refresher. It works WONDERS. You will need to adjust the amount of sprays accordingly. Walmart and Amazon have the best prices.

Double bagging helps as well. You can also spray the inside of the can in your garage with the Febreeze odor eliminator.. If this fails, sprinkle a little kitty litter inside your garbage bag, before bagging it up each time. It's cheap, and does a decent job of neutralizing odors. I hope this helps!😊

Can't imagine hiring someone to power wash my trash can; I just use a garden hose to clean it (no specialist necessary).

That's what I do.  I take the can out to the driveway gutter, pour some Lysol in it and power hose it.  I find it doesn't smell as bad when i leave the lid up in the heat so it doesn't "cook" as fast.  I keep my can at the back of the house.

There is a type of odor neutralizing bags on the big A called Bos Bags that are fantastic.

My HOA requires pet waste be picked up immediately and trash cans be kept inside.

My garage is not temperature regulated and is HOT. My dog is a 65 pound lab mix so you can imagine the nauseating aromas I was getting.

I found these bags and have up to 7 days worth of pet waste in my there and I smell absolutely nothing.

I was so impressed with the bags.

Charcoal briquettes will take care of the problem.

I have been spraying ours with that fairly new spray you can find at walmart called Microban.  I liberally sprayed and shut the lid....another application may be necessary but it worked.

Make sure the problem is not from maggots.  As we all know flies love trash cans and if you throw away partially eaten pet food they will lay their eggs in that.  Happened to us and we had to clean it out with bleach to get rid of them.  If it's really bad just ask your trash company to give you a new can that you have maggots you can't get rid of.  They don't like the word maggot and will replace it with a brand new can.

eta:  I just remembered that my husband told the trash co that there were holes in the can from their mechanical lifting and shaking it out into their trucks and that was the entry for the flies which laid their eggs in it. The mechanical arms did leave punctures in our trash cans......point is, they replaced both of our cans one of which had maggots that we poured bleach in but they came back a week later. None since getting the new cans.
