When I retired in 2010, I converted my 401k to a life annuity. 

 

In 2008,I lost about $40,000 in my 401k - in a mini-crash and got out of the market when I retired. 

 

(I recovered half the $40,000 by the end of 2010.)

I turned 72 this past Sept. & decided to take the RMD as monthly withdrawals.  My financial person did the paperwork & this year, the percentage was only spread over Sept.-Dec., so the monthly amount will decrease a little next year when it will be spread over a full 12 months.
