Beyonce and Jay-Z Move to Trademark Their Baby's Name

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect the name of their infant daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. The new parents have plans to reserve their child's name for possible use as a brand name for a line of baby-related products, including carriages, diaper bags and baby cosmetics. Yes, baby cosmetics are apparently a real thing.

The superstar couple were forced to act quickly in protecting the name after fashion designer Joseph Mbeh submitted an application to trademark "Blue Ivy Carter NYC" on January 11th, only four days after the child was born. A second applicant attempted to claim "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV" for a line of fragrances on January 20th. Both claims were denied, as the Trademark Office recognized that the name belong to the instantly famous infant. Mbeh later issued a statement claiming that he had planned to pitch a line of products to Jay-Z and Beyoncé, and had no intention of ripping them off.
