@mormel20, I totally get what you are asking and think it is a very reasonable question. Like you, I also donate gifts every holiday season.

I would like to believe I am making the season bright for some folks in need.

My life experiences is that in poverty, everyone around you and your family is usually in poverty too.

I went to school in the 1960's with kids that literally wore the same piece of clothing every day, didn't have shoes, didn't have enough to eat, lived in shacks you couldn't house a dog in now.

I read Hillybilly Elegy about 10 years ago--when it first came out, and it was pretty spot on about the issue.  Throwing money at it won't fix it.  People need jobs, education for the jobs, and a reason to work.  And frankly, don't help people who won't work (another issue).

Anyway, close to my heart and a very emotional issue for me.  I didn't live it, but I lived next to it.  So please forgive my frankness and lack of a probably polite answer to things related to this.  And no, many people don't have anybody to step up--they are all probably short of a good meal.  They don't live next to you, you will probably never see them or their house.  Or their yard, which sometimes is shocking too.

We have supported our local Toys for Tots program for years, and know it has helped many local children have a Christmas.

Just last week a spokesperson for the area program reported on finding duplicate signups; multiple parents had signed up for gifts in 3 different local counties, and were caught right away, since all the processing is thru the main branch in this county!

@RedTop Charities are now often just opening the doors without signup or accountability of any kind.  And crooks are stealing from the needy and fleecing donors.  I will be glad when some of this is stopped.  Help the needy!  Of course!  But stop letting scam artists steal from them.

I want to give to the USPS adopt a Santa letter program, but I am overly amazed at all the requests, so I just have to pass.

This is what I saw today:

I-phone 15

V-bucks

Apple watch

New tires for my car

Money for a house so I can have my own room

Flat screen TV

Oh, well, at least the Salvation Army does a better (more realistic) job of screening requests!

I believe laziness and greed factor into this. It is a shame, but I will still participate in giving.

I donate diapers to the Salvation Army on their website.  I order them through Amazon and they are delivered directly to the Salvation Army.
