Tornadoes in Massachusetts? (7/7 4pm CST)

I don't think I've ever heard of a tornado in the far Northeast...thank goodness you have basements. Be safe.

Have there been tornadoes touching the ground, or are they predicted?

Right now I think it's a prediction, just got off the highway, lots of flooding....

Scary. Keep a watchful eye and your ears open and run for shelter - don't take chances.

Re: Tornadoes in Massachusetts? (7/7 4pm CST)

1953 Worcester, MA - 94 killed (Classified as an F4 after the scale was developed)

1989 Northeast saw an outbreak - also believe that was F4

1995 Great Barrington, MA - F4 not sure how many died but less than the Worcester tornado

2011 is the one Springfield MA experienced

So although it's not Tornado Alley, they do occur but not frequently.

Jim Cantore shared this pic on FB of the storm passing north of Boston around supper time tonight taken from Fenway Park (Q won't let me post it):

Looks like a tornado wanted to form but just came up a bit short.

Re: Tornadoes in Massachusetts? (7/7 4pm CST)

I grew up near Worcester Mass. I was born in the late fifties but my mother tells us all the time how she was pregnant with my sister in 1953 and they had to Tornado. I remember many times as a child, having to go down in the basement. I live in Florida now for the last 33 years, and basically we only have small Tornados. One passed through my yard a few years ago and took a tree down. I actually think we had more severe weather in the Northeast than we do in Florida.
