Too young for a tablet/pad?

A friend is shopping for an electronic tablet for her son's upcoming birthday. He is going to be 8 years old. Is that too young, or is this just the way of the world these days?

I'm all for kids learning about technology when they are young, but in this case I think it's more intended to be a toy.

BTW, my son is 45, and I have no grandkids, so I'm not tuned into what kids want/use/need these days.
