Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

@Enufstuff   Wow, the event your daughter worked on sounded like a huge success!  Nice for all the volunteers to help.  500 yikes,

We also had "caps" when we were young.  Also you could put a cap in  something that you hit, and the top would fly.  I can't remember what it was called.  I know some ended up on the roof.  We did rolls of caps with rocks, too, to see the sparks.  We had so much fun with simple toys and games.  Many great summer memories.

Thanks again for the beautiful Toni creations.

Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

@Enufstuff, Hello Do. A,

Just wanted to address this one topic today.  Will Be back later with more.

I am truly sorry to hear of your brother and sister-in-law's

Covid sickness.  Yes, I think it is here, constantly changing and adapting, and largely being ignored.

Very, very scary.  I do hope your sister-in-law is open to seeing a pulmonologist.  That cough is concerning.  There is an over-the-counter med for coughs that is quite good - "Cough DM" - that my lung doctor recommends.

So I guess we are back to the worry of COVID.  Despite being vaxed, people forget it is meant to prevent cases that call for hospitalization,  no guarantee of avoiding the virus.

I use "Lysol Air," a spray to eliminate bacteria and viruses.

I buy it from Amazon in bulk, has a "white linen" scent that is very light and pleasant, avoiding smelling like a hospital.  I walk around the house and spray fairly often.

For my bathrooms, I use a Lysol spray called "Brand New Day."  it is an all-purpose cleaner, eliminates the bad stuff, with a very pleasant scent.  I can't stand the smell of bleach!

You likely are using products you like, but I just wanted to share.  So, once again, here we are, trying to stay safe.  I keep remembering my daughter's FIL, gone now for about a year, and what he went through.  hooked up to an oxygen tank trying to survive.  And I also remember my dear brother, fully vaxed, but quite sick nonetheless, with no health issues.

I am so happy that you are sharing your beautiful work with all here.  I am "up to my eyeballs" trying to clean out this house.

Enough clothing for a village, collectors of all sorts of stuff, etc.etc.  Attic, basement, garage, well you get the drift.  The Vietnam Vets picked up more yesterday.  Those triangle things are wonderful, and I also got some pant hangers from Amazon that have worked out well.

We would never, ever be able to take. Last stuff if we both, or the one left, moved to smaller quarters.  But at least the junk would be gone, and we could see what we have.

Oh, the book arrived about that wonderful Native American hero.  It's on my stack of "to read" books.

Be back to discuss more later.  There's a book on that subject!

Best wishes,

Pam

Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

@Enufstuff  Dear Donna,

I hope you are doing well and also that your sister-in-law is recovering.  It is scary.

My DD was one of the first to get COVID.  She works with some international folks in her lab, and thinks that she caught it after the Christmas break that first year, after everyone was back.  At that time, one had to wait a week for a diagnosis, as your sample was sent to a lab in California.  Fortunately, she got better and has no lasting effects.  Scary time for us.

I am sorry for any disappointments you have encountered.  Life, as I know it, has changed over the years.  Yes, I also have been through my hurts, as well.  It really seems that some have become more self-centered and fail to see what is important in life.  Just me,  but I think our culture feeds on this.  Like you, I was brought up to respect others always.  I do try to ground myself, but what hurts - well, it hurts.

Wondering what your next project will be.  I am looking forward to hearing about it.  I hope you have been able to watch the two Josh Gates episodes dealing with Alexander the Great.  Quite interesting.  Josh is quite a character, and he does make me laugh.  Wow, he says he has been to some 100

countries.  I am serious, but I do always look for humor somewhere.  Watching a few reruns of old shows that make me laugh - my DH also enjoys.

Hoping we all stay well, safe in our little nests.  I do not watch news shows anymore, just read a synopsis of what is going on. That is hard enough.

Sending my best wishes and hopes for all,

Pam

Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

@PamfromCT     Dear Pam,

Finally, I am able to sign in here. For what ever reason, for four days, I had not been able to sign in.

Two days in a row, I called customer service,

about this issue. First, I was told that I needed to recreate my password. But that did not work. In order to set a new password, I had to enter my email address. The message kept coming up that my email address was not found.

The second day, it still was not working and I was told to do some other things, that did not work. The rep also

told me that their IT department was working on some problems.  My son told me that was probably where the problem  was, not letting me in and not a password issue.

Yesterday, I decided to just register under a new account, but I was not able to do that either. Just when I was about to make up a new email address, I finally got in. Annoying!

So, it seems that you have been very ambitious with

going through things and actually getting rid of stuff. I have to admire your being able to accomplish so much. I still have not even opened my package of those triangles.

I have been lazy in that department. I have not been motivated to go through all the books and clothes, to rid myself of clutter. I know that it needs to be done, but I find other more

pleasant things to do.

Yesterday, I finished reading a book and I just need to push myself to go through my stacks of books to declutter.

Sadly, not many people seem to be interested in reading. Smiley Sad

I love books and it will be difficult to decide which

ones to get rid of.

I talked to my sister in law and she still has the cough, but it is not continual. She said that it seems to go away and then it comes back. She isn't taking anything for it. I made

some suggestions, but "you can only lead a horse".

She also said that she thinks that she has  "long Covid". She has had achy muscles, since being sick. She has not seen a doctor. I don't know if a doctor can help with that.

Other than that, she feels better and tests negative.

You reminded me of myself, always spraying Lysol

in the house, when my children were growing up. Now I just use the Lysol wipes, for surfaces.

We hardly leave the house and few people come here,

so I haven't felt the need to spray Lysol. Maybe I should have a can in the house, just in case.

I did look on youtube to see if I could watch Josh Gates and the episodes on Alexander The Great. I found one

about finding his tomb. But when I tried to watch other episodes, it said that I needed to sign up for Hulu to watch them.  I'll have to see if I can watch them another way or just

wait to see if the are rerun on TV.

Today, on History, I was watching a documentary about the

Shroud of Turin, then one about King Solomon's mines. After that was the story of the 105.6 carat Koh i noor diamond from India, which dates back to 900 B.C.  It came to Britain to be

worn by Queen Victoria and is in the crown worn by Queen

Elizabeth.  I enjoy these kinds of shows.

I have no plans to go out, it is too hot and humid. Last Saturday, I went out for dinner with two of my daughters, to a lovely Greek restaurant.

For now, I just want to stay indoors, where it is cool. Perhaps

tomorrow, I will get motivated to start going through my books.

Maybe next week, I'll post the next Toni doll outfit and some of my July flowers, that are in bloom.

I don't watch news either, most of it is not good. My husband

watches CNN all day and I told him that they have recently taken a bad turn and it would be less upsetting for him, not to watch. But he doesn't really listen to me. So, if he gets aggravated with all the goings on, it is on him. I read online

what I need to know.

We can only pray for the best, for all of us and our country.

Stay cool and comfortable and take care,

                                                       Donna

Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

[ Edited ]

@lynnie61   It seems that there have been problems with the Q website and I have not been able to sign in for four days.

So, I wanted to correct what I said before, about my daughter's event. Her husband told her 500 people, but she later told me that it was probably more like 300-400. Still that was more than they expected.

One hour in, they were running out of things, since they only expected about 200 and her husband had to go get more bottles of water and Italian ice.

They had plenty of hot dogs.

Years ago, every playground in the city had events, funded by the city. That is no more. Now, neighborhoods do their own things and some do nothing.

This being their third year doing 4th of July, people from other areas learned about this on Facebook, so a lot more came to our park. She was happy, they love doing this for the kids.

I thought that they just had a pony for rides, but they also had a horse for the kids to ride and a lot of activities.

I remember kids on 4th of July, doing things with those red rolls of caps. When I was 4-5 years old, I had a cowgirl outfit and a gunbelt with double holsters. The two cap guns used those red rolls of caps, but I never got caps for 4th of July.

By the way, my red tricycle was my 'horse".

Toni may be back next week, in a new outfit. I'm glad that you enjoy seeing her fashions.

Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

@Enufstuff   Very nice turnout.  Nice to hear how people want to help on activities that the town, city, or community can no longer do.  I'm sure your daughter and family made a lot of kids happy.

We did so many fun things back then, that kids may not get to enjoy today.  We were happy with simple toys, using our imaginations and enjoying the simplier times.  Haha, caps and paper dolls.

How we loved getting dressed up to go downtown to see the department store Christmas displays.  Purse, hat, gloves or a muff.  It was so magical, and maybe lunch with nana.  We took public transportation and made a day out of it.  We had three large popular department stores in downtown.  I miss those days.  No longer any big department stores there in our city.  🤨. Oh, the good old days.

Have a great day Donna.

No worries, lots of wonky things happen on these forums and website to even order some days.  Last week I put something in my cart, and it added 4 of them, and it wouldn't let me update.  Crazy some days.  Glad you could sign on again.

Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

@lynnie61   Downtown, what a nice memory. We had a lot of lovely stores and a few big department stores in the 60's.

We still had some nice stores in the 70's, but the big mall had put our two large department stores, out of business.

I loved shopping at Christmas time and it was magical, as you said. All the stores were decorated and had lovely window

displays. We always dressed nice to go shopping, in those days.

My children were born in the 60's and 70's and they remember some of the stores. They had fun shopping downtown too.

When my three girls were junior high age, they would take the bus downtown. I would give them my Lerner's credit card so they could go pick out some cute clothes. I shopped there often

and the sales women knew me. I would call to let them know that my girls were coming in with my credit card and had my permission to shop.

My boys were younger and when the girls were at school,

sometimes I would shop with one of my sons. I would bribe them to behave and have patience while I shopped. Then, I

would take them to the candy store to pick out what they wanted. Sometimes I would take them to the toy store and they could get a toy.

Back then, kids loved to shop at the Five and Ten stores. We had Woolworth's, Kresge's and McLellan's. As a young girl and teen, that was where I bought all my nailpolish and lipsticks and little gifts. We liked the pet department with the

goldfish, turtles and parakeets.

One time my younger brother bought one of those little turtles,

that he kept in a turtle dish, with a little palm tree. He was about eight years old.

I came home from high school one day and I heard him playing in the bathroom sink, with the water running. I peeked

in to see what he was up to and was totally horrified.

He was giving his pet turtle a bath in the sink and was scrubbing it with a toothbrush. Guess whose toothbrush he was using. Mine!  I freaked out and went running to my mother and

told her I needed to get a new toothbrush. We lived across the street from a drugstore, so she gave me the money for a new

toothbrush.

I asked my brother if he had used my toothbrush to clean his

turtle, before that time. He said no.

Even all these years later, my brother, the Latin professor, with his PHD, still insists that was the only time he did that.

I still have to wonder about that. Smiley Happy

Re: Toni Girls - 4th of July

@Enufstuff   OMG  I would have freaked about the toothbrush too.  That is quite the funny story.

We loved the 5&10's.  Murphys, Woolworths, Grants, McCorys.  Lots of 45 records, lipsticks and nail polishes.  When we were 7-10 years old those stores were we the kids Christmas shopped!

I remember one year my sister and I bought my mom a teal pitcher and glass set.  Wow, were we proud of THAT gift for her.  I think my sister still has the pitcher.  Bought at GC murphys.

I forgot about Lerners!  Our Lerners downtown was two stories.  We loved that store.

Lots of good memories.  I guess todays kids have their own memories.  Just different than ours.
