Although it's obviously a nice gift to give, what I'm curious about is how is it he's in the press room that he knows they needed one and when it was time to get a new one?
Good question. Whether his motives were pure or political i can say without waivering that giving such an expensive machine to a break room is a phenomenal waste of money. Few will know how to use it and as anyone knows who has ever used a breakroom, noone cleans coffee machines or refrigerators or anything else. And i can speak from personal exoerience that the WH Press gang hangs out at a couple of coffee shacks less than a block from the Press Room. I used to run into Helen early every morning.

It always astounds me how some posters think that they have the right to judge how strangers spend their own money on something that has nothing to do with the poster.

Political.
Not policital.
Actor.
Nor an actor.
Rich.
Not rich.
Really doesn't matter WHO donated it...or even the reason why...or the fact he's financial able to.
The fact he's adding an accompanying note...that is what's...odd.
'look at me...RightHereYesItWasMeMeMeMeMeMyselfAndI".
Typical self-centered society we live in.
ANYone, ANYtime, ANYwhere can donate without the
'Pomp & Circimstance' of a Signed by Tom Hanks note.
"Huh...did you see we got a new coffee machine in the break room?
Wonder who sprung for that? I dunno...but it's nice."
That's what should've happened.
There's a hidden motive when a 'IT'S FROM ME!' note attached.
And that leaves a bad taste w/ me.
Give for the Cause, not the Applause.
That's how I roll.

SMH
Hanks has become friends with some of the journalists over the years, of course he would add a note for them if they weren't present when he was there.
So many seem unable to comprehend it when another person does something nice. They become suspicious and can only think of ulterior motives instead of common decency or good manners, all foreign to them.

I didn't know it was poor etiquette to sign your name, on a card or note, when you're giving a gift or gifts.
So, birthday, Christmas, wedding, anniversary, just because gifts etc. should be given, anonymously?

On charitable giving, I would tend to agree with you but this was just a fun gesture.
