Re: Today's technology, just how reliant are you?

I have a cell phone, laptop and kindle.  I would miss the kindle the most, but could live without it.

Re: Today's technology, just how reliant are you?

While I wouldn't want to live without my mobile phone, I definitely could but I love being able to text and call when not near a landline. It is so handy when you stop by the grocery store and can quickly ask someone a question about what they wanted you to pick up.

As for business, it would be very difficult. I remember the old way of doing things so I know I could go back to that but with everyone else doing it with technology, that would put a business owner very behind and at a big disadvantage. I mean with my business and personal finances I rely so much on technology just to keep track of finances. My husband set us up with financial programs that just keep our lives in order and every cent is accounted for and I can look up anything I need to even if it was a purchase made months ago, in seconds.

What I would find most difficult to give up is just googling stuff. I was a very curious child and my parents have 3 full sets of encyclopedias, dictionaries and thesaurus's. I cannot tell you how much I used those because I always wanted to know how something worked, who someone was, etc... All of those encyclopedias I still have and they are worn from the constant use from my brother, sister and I. Of course I could go back to the old way, but I wouldn't want to. I love being able to google something I am curious about and I will often have a thought in the middle of the night that I don't have an answer for and I will google it on my phone immediately. I cannot sleep if I don't know something I have thought about. I must google something at least 25 times a day and that is a low estimate.

I could live easily without FB, twitter or instagram but again they are nice to have. I love that I can keep up with family and friends overseas and see videos and pictures of them instantly. I makes you feel closer to them and the little things that go on in our daily lives. I got to see my close friends daughter who is just a couple of months old and I haven't met yet. They live in Australia and seeing pictures or videos of her and being able to see and hear her sweet little laugh, is everything to me.

Yeah, I guess I forgot about how automated our homes are going to be in a few short years. Unlocking the door, controlling the thermostat, and watching every room right from the cell no matter where you are.

Some of the best use of technology, in my opinion is the alert necklaces people have now, so when the have an emergency in their homes, they can get help right away without a phone. I see those are going mobile now too, and will be working anywhere there is a cell signal. Good stuff.

Wondrous thing, technology, but invasive as well. Quite the double edged sword.

Yes! How could I forget about this? Our home is a smart house and at first I hated it but I love it now. So handy for so many things. Glad my husband insisted.

Re: Today's technology, just how reliant are you?

Last winter after a big storm I had no electricity or heat for about 4 days and I was iced/snowed in.  Frankly I didn't miss any of the technology.  Got up when it was light outside and went to bed when it got dark.  During daylight  to keep busy and warm, I did things around the house like cleaning out some drawers and closets.  My cell phone is the old flip top, used for emergencies only, and while it worked most of the time, I didn't have a need to use it.   I would miss the convenience of online if it were gone for months but, in the short term, I was perfectly fine without technology.

Re: Today's technology, just how reliant are you?

I'm very reliant on today's technology.  Why shouldn't I be?  In business as well as in my personal life, it saves us so much time.

Recently, I've learned that even when hiring new service or handymen to come to my home, they all ask that I send a text to their cell phones, with my name, address, and phone number.  The first time I was asked to do this, I did as asked, and the guy who came was in his 20's.  So I thought it was something the younger people want.  The next time, the guy who showed up, looked to be at least 60.

I then realized it's better for them to have my personal info on their cell phones, and they probably also put my address into their GPS so they can easily find my house.

Re: Today's technology, just how reliant are you?

Some of the conveniences are very nice; there are elements of technology that I never want to live without (cable tv, satellite radio, laptops, cell phones).  However, I am not interested in spending money every few months to upgrade. My phone's not 'Smart,'  I enjoy shopping for books in a bookstore (that smell!) and getting cards, magazines, and letters in the mail. If I want to know about my friends' lives, I look forward to having lunch and catching up - not reading about it on FB. Sometimes I like to go for walks and just take in the scenery and the fresh air. Everyone seems to be in a rush to get wherever, so they can - make more money? buy more things? I still enjoy the simple things, and feel like the world is moving at warp-speed around me. That's ok! It gives me something to watch while hanging out on my porch.

Re: Today's technology, just how reliant are you?

I embraced technology with no problem.

I don't have a landline anymore. Just my Smartphone which I find invaluable.  I can pay my bills while away from home. I can get directions if I get lost while driving.

I enjoy texting. It is convenient for sending short messages that don't necessarily require aphone call.

I pay all bills via my computer and I love the wealth of information that is right at my fingertips day and night.

I have a Facebook account, but it's mostly to keep up with out of state family. I don't post there much.

I find it amusing that some of those who seem to sneer about  the use of technology manage to find their way here for hours on end every day.  Smiley Very Happy

Re: Today's technology, just how reliant are you?

Even though I have been an electronics nut since before high school, I am not that reliant on much of the later technologies.

I have a Smart phone I cannot even tell you the last time I used it. Do take it along with me when out and about, but no "taking" just to be "taking". No texting, I prefer talking and more preferably, face to face.

My wife has a tablet and I am using it to type this post, some verbally. Have a fairly up to date computer, but do not use that often since I got our Samsung Curved Smart TV.

It has the Samsung new browser system along with an Octacore Processor. It has a voice to text that is almost perfect, which makes it easier to post. Also much easier to see with my old eyes since is a 65" Curved screen.

I could get along just fine without the cellphone/tablet and even the internet in a pinch. Gotta have my music and surround system, along with our TV to watch my hockey games.

While I like some new technological advances, but to me the worst of the worst? To me that would be the advent of the cellphone. More and more people are getting further away from face to face discussions.

That's it for me "mominohio".
