I guess I can consider myself as being fortunate to have been able to see the ocean on the east, west and gulf in Texas....... Each has its own beauty about it. What I found so fascinating was how the beaches are so different. The beaches I preferred to be on were the sandy ones.......loved walking through the warm sand in my bare feet... But do have to say the California sea sides are so beautiful. Nothing boring about any of them. Just pure beauty.

Born and raised in CA....I am not a beach girl, per se'......hate the heat and humidity, but still love looking at the ocean. I could not live right along the ocean, way too moist and too much fog.
Saw my first FLAT land a few years ago in Southern Texas, did not like that at all.
In CA, everywhere you look, there are mountains on the horizon.

I bet there are a lot of people who vacation near their home state. Many people have never flown.

My husband is 60 and has never been to the ocean. He also doesn't know what a fresh picked California peach or any other kind of tree ripened fruit tastes like. I can't wait until he retires next year so I can take him AND my kids home for the first time.
I spent a week at the beach in Galveston when I was a kid with my nephews (who were my age) and I had a blast. Showme is right in that there are quite a few differences between the beaches at the gulf coast and Pacific. I can't speak for the east coast as I haven't been yet but want to go to Florida once before our final move to California.
I have to add that growing up in the northern California valley where we could drive a few hours to either snow or ocean I had no concept of how COLD it could get in the midwest but NOW I KNOW.....especially after this year! I had always pictured Wisconsin and Minnesota to be like the Sierra Nevada's but they're totally NOT!

....not so hard if you look at a map of the USA. The majority of Americans live far away from any ocean.

I don't think it's that hard to believe, raven. There are people who aren't as fortunate as others, and a vacation, or any type of travel at all isn't in the cards for them, and may never be.
Noel, Lotus, and muttmom, TY for the kind words! I wish I'd been able to do more back then.
Back to gidget's thread...

I grew up within a couple of hours of the ocean but didn't see it until I was married. Then it was our vacation spot for 2 or 3 weeks every year.
