@gertrudecloset

I wasn't aware of this until 2 years ago. Never did see the full explanation, or names for this until reading your post. Glad you gave mention to this, along with its history.

I quit high school twice and the only history I learned was World History. Was starting American History classes when I quit the last time and joined the Army.

 Why wasn't this celebrated on September 22 the date Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation?

If you read the article posted, or Google for more information, you can find out why.

In 1863, during the American Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free. More than two years would pass, however, before the news reached African Americans living in Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The former slaves immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting, song, and dance.

Because Texas was the last State to recognize emancipation (more than two years later!) when a Union general proclaimed those people enslaved were free.  These poor people were not even aware of the Emancipation Proclamation.  Shameful, but that is our history. This day proclaims freedom for everyone.

Tomorrow we celebrate the Federal Holiday. All banks closed, no postal delivery.

Its a great day to learn more about how this all went down and finally is recognized and taught about.

P.s. Thanks @gertrudecloset for your post!
