As I write here every year on Flag Day, on this day I wear the American flag pin my beloved father, an immigrant from Greece who came through Ellis Island in 1916, gave me. This gift is obviously very special to me, as it was for him.

He loved the United States and he wanted me to show my love for my country, too.

This is a horrible photo, but I see these two flags every time I return home from work. Depending on which airport I leave from, I pass by them when I return from traveling and they are a very visual reminder that I am home. They bring me peace and happiness.

I really love these two flags.

Sunday is Flag Day
Do you know the flag's history? According to American legend, in June 1776, George Washington commissioned Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress, to create a flag for the new nation in anticipation of a declaration of its independence.

On June 14, 1777, John Adams spoke about the flag at a meeting of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. He said, "Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation." There have been twenty-seven official versions of the flag so far; stars have been added to it as states have entered the Union. The current version dates to July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state.

On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14. Many Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the Red, White and Blue in front of homes and businesses. The day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

I have a friend who's father has passed away, and at a ripe old age, but when she was a child, his birthday was today (Flag Day), and he told his kids for years that all the flags everywhere on display were for his birthday, and wasn't is so nice of everyone to recognize his special day that way, flying all those flags!! LOL

She said they believed him till they were in their teens!
